La bella e la bestia

La città si sta svuotando – Eden. L’autista del tram stamattina sfoggiava una bella abbronzatura e una collanina di conchiglie. F. dice che le è piaciuta la serie degli scheletri fossili dell’AMNH, perciò questa è per lei. Sto rimuginando sull’idea di un vero progetto. Mi piace quando sono inchiodata in una buca e d’improvviso le idee cominciano a salire come bolle in superficie.

The city is emptying out – Eden.  Tram driver this morning was sporting a tan and a seashell necklace. F. says she enjoyed the AMNH fossil series, so this is for her. I’m mulling over the idea of a real project. I love when I’m stuck in a rut and suddenly ideas bubble up to the surface.

Essendo immersa nei miei pensieri, oggi sul blog mi dedico alle  frivolezze, è arrivato il momento di confessarvi un’altra delle mie passioni: non c’è cosa che mi distragga di più di una buona rivista inglese di interior design -  ebbene sì, sono patita di case, di mobili e oggetti vintage, e tanto quando rifuggo dalla rigida concezione borghese e mercantile del design di impronta milanese, tanto mi danno molto gusto i giovani designer olandesi, le ironiche capostipiti del nuovo design inglese, qualche francese, qualche brasiliano, sudafricano, giapponese, e una rivista australiana. Perfino nel design di interni si contrappongono realismo e apparenza, divertimento e seriosità, qualità accessibile e rigide separazioni classiste. In generale noi italiani ci prendiamo (e ci prendono) veramente troppo sul serio, e anche questo si vede. Così oggi condivido qualche segretuccio: la mia interior designer preferita è Ilse Crawford, seguono a ruota Emily Chalmers e Jane Cumberbatch, la rivista inglese in assoluto è Elle Decoration Uk, seguita dalla più popolare ma sempre interessante LivingEtc; una rivista australiana da vedere è InsideOut, per la quale lavora Shannon Fricke; la fotografa d’interni più brava per me è Debi Treloar; quanto ai blog, ce n’è da vendere: fra i  miei preferiti quello bilingue della giovane turca Alis, quello svedese di Emma, quello americano di Lena. Per ora mi fermo qui, sennò diventa interessante come due maschi che parlano di moto :)

Since today I am absorbed in my own thoughts, i’m going to post about some frivolity: the time has come to confess to you another passion of mine: there is nothing that takes my mind off worries more than a good British interiors magazine – well then, I have a weakness for home interiors and vintage furniture and objects, and as much as I shun the stiff bourgeois and mercantile conception of Milanese design, as much I get a lot of juice from young Dutch designers, ironic progenitors of new British design, some French, Brazilian, South African, Japanese, and one Australian magazine. Even in interior design you get a clash between realism and ostentation, fun and unsmilingness, accessible quality and rigid class divides. Just in general we Italians take ourselves (and they take us) much too seriously, and you can see that too. So today I share some tiny secret: my favourite interior stylist ever is Ilse Crawford, followed up closely by Emily Chalmers and Jane Cumberbatch, the British magazine par excellence is Elle Decoration UK, followed by the more popular but always interesting LivingEtc; an Australian magazine you should see is InsideOut, the one Shannon Fricke works for;  the best interiors photographer to me is Debi Treloar; as far as blogs, there’s plenty: among my favourites the bilingual one of young Turkish Alis, the Swedish one by Emma, and Lena’s one from the States. Now I’ll stop, else it turns interesting as a boys conversation about motorbikes :)

Cosa succede quando non abbiamo nulla di cui preoccuparci, quando possiamo rallentare col lavoro, quando non ci riempiamo di cose da fare? Siamo veramente capaci di non riempire tutti i buchi liberi, di staccare il telefono,  di non controllare continuamente la posta? E cosa succede se lo facciamo? Sono le dinamiche che ha scoperto Andrea Scher quando ha fatto una pausa volontaria di un mese dal suo blog, potete leggere qui che cosa ha scoperto. Io sto raggiungendo un’ulteriore livello del mio disfarmi degli oggetti inutili, svuotare la casa, vivere con l’essenziale, e mi fa stare bene, ma sull’affollamento del tempo è tutta un’altra storia. La grande Keri Smith sta sognando una vita in camper, come fece un tempo la pittrice Emily Carr nelle foreste canadesi.  I suoi diari di quell’esperienza sono magici, e immagino che se hai una foresta, non serva molto altro.

What happens when we don’t have anything to worry about, when we can slow down at work, when we don’t fill our time with things to do? Are we really able to stop filling the tiniest empty spaces, to unplug our phones, to stop checking e-mail every minute? And what happens when we do? These are the dynamics that Andrea Scher has experienced when she has made a voluntary one-month pause in her blog, you can read about her discoveries here. I have reached a further level in my getting rid of useless objects, emptying the house, living with only the essential, and it makes me feel good, but the crowding of one’s time is a different story altogether. The great Keri Smith is dreaming about living in a camper, as once did painter Emily Carr in the Canadian forests. Carr’s diaries about that experience are magic, and I guess if you have a forest around you, you don’t need much else.

Oggi  è un giorno di cose nuove, di voltar pagina, di tirare il fiato. Ieri ho lavorato tutto il giorno alla seconda stesura del cap 7 e del cap 8, si procede a gonfie vele verso il cap 9. E questo è Fela, il più piccolo della tribù :)

Today is a day for new things, of page-turning, of breathing deep. Yesterday I worked all day on the second draft of chapter 7 and chapter 8, proceeding to chapter 9 with the wind in my sails. Oh, and this is Fela, the youngest in our tribe:)

La Mole Sister ha fatto questo per me con le sue mani. E’ una specie di tradizione di famiglia,  e rappresenta lei. E’ una delle cose che mi danno gioia oggi, insieme al fatto di rovesciare in positivo una situazione negativa, finire la seconda stesura del capitolo 6 e muovermi veloce sul capitolo 7, trovare un buon libro nuovo da leggere, pensare alle vacanze, aspettare i temporali, pulire la B che si è impiastricciata col miele a colazione, fare progetti per il Giants Stadium, ascoltare il discorso di Barack Obama oggi al Cairo, che visto dalla nostra situazione in Italia è stato parecchio simile a guardare Star Trek. E a voi cosa dà gioia oggi?

The Mole Sister handmade this for my birthday. It’s a sort of  family tradition, it represents herself. It’s one of the things that bring me joy. Along with turning a bad situation into a good one, finishing the second draft of chapter 6 and moving quickly into chapter 7, finding a new good book to read, thinking of holidays, waiting for rainstorms, washing breakfast honey from the B, making plans for Giants Stadium, hearing Barack Obama’s speech in Cairo today, which from our situation in Italy was very much like watching Star Trek. What brings you joy today?

Oggi ho letto che gli scienziati sono convinti che produciamo col cuore onde di energia per diversi metri intorno a noi, e in numero 5000 volte superiore a quelle che produciamo col cervello. Quello che è strano è che per la maggior parte del tempo i moti del nostro cuore li subiamo, invece di imprimere loro una direzione. L’arte forse ci aiuta a dare a questo caos così potente una forma che possiamo condividere. Quello che continuo a imparare da M. è netto e cristallino, energia pura, la disciplina che permette di imbrigliare l’ispirazione, il gusto folle per il gioco, l’uso di tutto il corpo per produrre ciò che cuore e mente progettano – è molto bello.

I read today that scientists believe our hearts produce energy in waves around them for some metres, in a quantity 5000 times bigger than the energy produced by our brains. What is funny is that most of the time we sort of put up with what our hearts feel instead of directing it. Art probably help us shape up this powerful chaos into a form we can share. What I keep on learning from M. is sharp and crisp, pure energy, the discipline to rein in inspiration, the crazy taste for play, the use of all your body to produce what heart and mind design- it feels so good.

Al matrimonio mi sono infilata nella stupenda mostra di video di Tacita Dean, il caldo torrido rendeva ancora più credibili i rumori dei vecchi proiettori nelle sale dai soffitti affrescati altrimenti vuote, nel buio assoluto. Tacita Dean è la maestra della lentezza – ci sono segreti intrappolati nelle crepe del nostro tempo se solo rallentiamo abbastanza da vederle. Questo è il vecchio coreografo Merce Cunningham che danza (da fermo) sulla (silenziosa) “4′33”” di John Cage. Avrei bisogno di fare come lui.

While at the wedding, I sneaked into the beautiful exhibition of videos by Tacita Dean, the heat made the noise of projectors all the more believable in the otherwise empty rooms with frescoed ceilings, in absolute dark.  She’s the master of slow – secrets are trapped in the cracks of our time if we only slow down enough to observe. This is old coreographer Merce Cunnigham dancing (still) to John Cage’s (silent) ”4′33””. I’d need to do the same.

Questo è per la Mole Sister, che sta tessendo la sua nuova tela, in bocca al lupo sorella, metà del risultato sta nel dare inizio al processo. Alcune cose degne di nota nella nostra fettina di blogosfera: Stephanie racconta di come darsi delle limitazioni di colore la aiuti a concentrarsi su qualcosa di specifico nei suoi progetti, altrimenti si trova bloccata per troppa scelta – questo mi fa suonare un campanello, come ho visto anche con gli studenti della Nuova Accademia di belle Arti di Milano, avere dei limiti nei progetti creativi fa bene, ogni volta che mi perdo di qua e di là scrivendo il mio libro (l’argomento è vaaaaasto) mi accorgo che devo solo attenermi strettamente al tema che avevo scelto fin dall’inizio, e questo aiuta molto. Amanda sta invitando i suoi lettori a spedirle foto delle loro macchine fotografiche e di come espongono e raccolgono le loro foto, molto carino! Mav è tornata, il suo nuovo progetto si chiama The card society, andate a vederlo con i vostri occhi, bellissimo come sempre. E, già che ci siamo, Camilla sta raccontando i progressi di Morran nella convalescenza, io e la B siamo stati un po’ preoccupati e ci è tornato il sorriso :) e oggi ho un pranzo importantissssimo –  incrociate le dita per me!!!

A few things on the web that are worth considering: Stephanie tells about colour restrictions helping her sort out what to focus on in her projects, otherwise she gets stuck with too much choice - this rings a bell, as I have experimented also with the students of the New Academy of Fine Arts in Milan  limitations in creative efforts are good, everytime I spread myself all over the place in writing my book (the subject is vaaaast) I realize I only have to strictly stick with the theme I chose in the first place, and that helps a lot. Amanda is inviting her readers to send in pictures of their cameras and their photos displays, very cute! Mav is back, her new project is called The card society, go there yourselves, it’s as beautiful as ever. And, by the way, Camilla is tracking Morran’s recovery from surgery, myself and the B have been quite worried and now back to smile :)  and I have a veeeery important lunch today- cross your fingers for me, please!
