La bella e la bestia

Una piccola anticipazione su Alaska di domani; nel fine settimana ho finalmente assaporato un libro che mi è cascato fra le mani a Brooklyn (in una libreria in cui di questi incidenti accadono spesso…), un piccolo saggio-catalogo, Long life cool white, della fotografa Moyra Davey. Allora esiste ancora qualcuno che lavora sui piccoli formati e l’estetica del quotidiano, e che concepisce la fotografia soprattutto nella cornice dei libri. Nel libro, Moyra propone sotto forma di annotazioni intime una sorta di collage delle sue letture sulla fotografia, da Walter Benjamin a Roland Barthes a Susan Sontag, alla ricerca della definizione di foto “vernacolare”. Nel suo mondo, ogni cosa è consumata e in questo sta la sua poesia. Incastonata nel mondo della fotografia spettacolare come un’isola di resistenza, occupata a chiedersi se non dovrebbe riciclare le proprie stesse foto invece di continuare a scattarne delle altre, Moyra Davey sembra adottare con naturalezza un’estetica della recessione. Nel frattempo, penso che questa lunga attesa del ritorno a casa della mia macchina fotografica produrrà qualche riflessione utile.

A little advance of tomorrow’s Alaska; over the weekend I was able to finally plunge into a book that fell into my hands in Brooklyn (in a bookshop where this tends to happen quite often…), a small catalogue-essay called Long life cool white from photographer Moyra Davey. So somebody still exists who works on small formats and the aestethics of daily life, conceiving photography mainly in the setting of books. In the book, Moyra offers as intimate annotations a sort of collage of her reading about photography, from Walter Benjamin to Roland Barthes and Susan Sontag, searching for a pinning down of “vernacular photography”. In her world, everything is consumed and that’s its poetry. Embedded in the world of spectacular photography like an island of resistance, busy wondering whether to recycle her own shots as opposed to shooting new ones, Moyra Davey seem to naturally embrace the aesthetics of the recession. In the meantime, I guess this long wait for my camera to come back home will turn into some productive thought process.
