E poi uno si sente dire che le parole sono solo quello che sono, parole. Parto dalla parola liquidambar, il nome dell’albero che avevo fotografato in autunno. Già da sola è una poesia. Scopro che oltre a chiamarsi, in italiano, “storace” americano (ahimè), è detto albero della gomma dolce e, a causa di certe propaggini, è soprannominato “albero alligatore” (e restiamo sempre nella famiglia dei miei totem). Adesso le sferette spinose sono cadute e ne ho raccolta qualcuna. Non sapevo come chiamarle, visto che di sicuro non sono pigne. Così scopro che sono i frutti del liquidambar, quelli che portano i semi. Per via della loro forma bizzarra, in inglese sono chiamati “monkey ball”,  ”space bug”, “bommyknocker”, “bir ball”, “gumball”, “cukoo-bir” or “sticky ball” – un intero mondo di fantasia fatto solo di parole.

Then they tell you that words are just what they are, words. I start from the word liquidambar, the name of the tree I had photographed in the autumn. It is already poetry in itself. Then I find that it’s also called sweetgum tree and, because of its strange branches and twigs, it is also nicknamed “alligator wood” (always in the family of my totems). Now the tiny spiky spheres have fallen and I have collected some. I wondered how to call them, since for sure they were not cones. So I found that they are the liquidambar fruits, the ones that bear the seeds. Because of their bizarre shape, they are nicknamed “monkey ball”,  ”space bug”, “bommyknocker”, “bir ball”, “gumball”, “cukoo-bir” or “sticky ball” – an entire fantasy world, built just out of words.

Una cosa ho scoperto di sicuro, che quando scriviamo ci trasformiamo in qualcosa che è fatto soltanto delle nostre cellule cerebrali, dimenticando tutto il resto. Una volta che ne sono uscita, sono rimasta scioccata nello scoprire di avere ancora un corpo. Non riuscivo a ricordarmi quello che avevo mangiato per settimane, o interi percorsi per andare al lavoro. Somiglia molto a quando si è innamorati, è un’ossessione, e se ne esce dall’altra parte svuotati e inetti, sebbene in qualche modo vincitori, estranei a se stessi. Così il tempo di zuppa di cui vi parlavo è diventato volutamente tempo di sonnellini, di dormite, di coccole, di letture, di film, di risate, di camminate, di odori, di maglioni caldi, di bagni, di cucinare e nuotare, tutto quel nutrimento che non ci viene dal pensiero – il mondo reale che arriva a noi attraverso il corpo e i sensi, e non mi sorprende che pian piano mi sto riprendendo. Mi chiedo se un giorno riuscirò a bilanciare meglio questi due aspetti.

Più esploro la blogosfera, più trovo compagni di Polaroid, è bellissimo. E l’Impossible Project sta lì a dimostrare che il puro commercio non necessariamente può dettare quello che amiamo. Sono molto vicini a mettere in produzione la nuova pellicola che tanto aspettiamo :)

One thing I’ve found for sure, in writing you turn into just your brain cells, forgetting everything else. Once I came out of my own writing, I was shocked at finding I actually still had a body. I couldn’t remember what I had eaten for weeks, or whole days of my commuting. It’s very much like being in love, it’s an obsession, and you come out of it at the other end emptied and inept, though a winner in your own way – a stranger to yourself. So soup time is now purposedly turning into nap time, sleep time, cuddle up time, reading time, movie-watching time, laughing time, walking time, smelling time, dressing up time, bathing time, cooking time, swimming time, all that nourishing that doesn’t come from thinking – the real world that comes to us through our bodies and senses, and no surprise I’m slowly recovering. I wonder whether one day I’ll be able to juggle this better.

The more I explore the blogosphere, the more I find fellow Polaroid fans. It feels so good. And The Impossible Project is there to show that pure commerce doesn’t necessarily dictates what we love. They are finally close to producing the new film we’ve been long waiting for :)
