La bella e la bestia

La prima lista mensile, eccola! I migliori libri che ho letto nelle ultime settimane (di cui non vi avevo ancora parlato), informazioni ita/ingl per ogni titolo (NB: durissima selezione fra decine di libri, anche a me capita di leggere un sacco di fuffa!)

The first monthly list, here it comes! Best 10 books I’ve read in the last few weeks (which I haven’t told you about before), both languages info for each title (beware: hard selection out of dozens, I happen to read a lot of crap too!)

1. Denis Johnson, “Albero di fumo”/Tree of smoke – (pura eccellenza! tutto nel link al post di ieri/pure writing excellence! everything in the link to yesterday’s post)
2. Kate Summerscale, “Omicidio a Road Hill House”/The suspicions of Mr Wicher or the murder at Road Hill House – (incredibile giallo/ ricerca storica/ investigazione/ biografia del primo detective di Scotland Yard/ mappa/ tour letterario vittoriano!/incredible noir story/ historic research/ investigation/ Scotland Yard ’sfirst detective biography/ map/ Victorian literary tour!)
3. Joan Didion, “L’anno del pensiero magico”/The year of magical thinking (vecchio libro che mi sono decisa a leggere trovandolo citato spessissimo nei blog, un bellissimo memoir sulla scoperta del lutto/old book I made my mind up I’d read after finding it often quoted on blogs, a wonderful memoir on the discovery of mourning)
4. Amy Hempel, (in uscita in italiano per Rizzoli/The collected stories (la più incredibile autrice di racconti che ho scoperto dai tempi di Carver e forse di Mary Robison/most amazing short story writer I’ve discovered since Carver and maybe Mary Robison)
5. Graeme Thomson, (sarà mai tradotto in italiano?)/I shot a man in Reno (un saggio sulla storia della ballata di morte, si è rivelato vitale per quello che sto scrivendo/an essay about the history of the death song, turned out vital for what I’m writing)
6. Richard Yates, “Revolutionary Road”/Revolutionary Road (scrittore di primissima categoria, basti dire che era allievo di Fitzgerald, un romanzo capolavoro del 1961 a lungo perduto /top class writing from a  Fitzgerald’s pupil, enough said, long lost masterpiece novel from 1961)
7. Alice Munro, “Le lune di Giove”/The moons of Jupiter (per me la più grande scrittrice vivente insieme a Philip Roth, un’altra delle sue magistrali raccolte di racconti/ to me the greatest living writer along with Philip Roth, one more collection of her masterly stories)
8. Donald Ray Pollock, “Knockemstiff”/Knockemstiff (scrittore sgangherato e coraggioso dell’Ohio torna nel luogo in cui è cresciuto a raccontare una galleria di personaggi / derailed and brave writer from Ohio goes back to the hole he grew up in to tell the stories of a gallery of characters)
9. Joseph O’Neill, (in uscita in italiano)/Netherland (il romanzo post 11 settembre sul cricket a New York di cui si è parlato moltissimo l’anno scorso, forse troppo rumore per nulla, un pelo troppo artificioso per i miei gusti/the post 9/11 novel about cricket in NY that was much talked about last year, maybe much ado about nothing, a touch too contrived for my taste)
10. Barack Obama, “I sogni di mio padre”/Dreams of my father (sì, proprio lui, il primo dei suoi libri, da 0 a 30 anni, uno di quei libri che pensi di sapere già cosa raccontano e invece non è così, il ragazzo ne ha passate un bel po’/yes, it’s him, the first of his books, 0 to 30 years of age, one of those books you think you know but you don’t, the guy has gone through a lot)

Per festeggiare i primi tre mesi pieni di questo blog, potrei accettare il consiglio di F., che mi ha suggerito di postare una colonnina sui libri – giusto delle liste di libri in italiano e in inglese che mi stanno piacendo. Potrei magari postarlo ogni fine del mese, cominciando da lunedì prossimo. Nel frattempo vi spedisco su uno dei blog di libri in inglese meglio informati in assoluto, The Elegant variation dello scrittore Mark Sarvas. Per oggi è tutto, un po’ di doveri mi chiamano, e poi stasera si festeggia la Mole Sister,  e nel weekend spero di placare il senso di colpa per i Grandi Lavori, di nuovo arenati. Buon fine settimana a  tutti!

To celebrate the first 3 full months of this blog, I could accept F.’s idea, who suggested I could post a book column – just a list of suggestions of books in Italian and in English that I’m enjoying. I could maybe post it at the end of every month, and we could start next Monday. In the meantime I direct you to one of the best informed blogs on all things bookish (for the English speaking world), writer Mark Sarvas’s The elegant variation. I’m done for today, duties call, plus tonight we’re celebrating the Mole Sister, and hopefully during the weekend I will sedate guilt for the Great works who are again at a standstill. prima di lasciarvi per il fine settimana. Volevo postarvi qualcosa di forte e chiaro; qui sta diluviando da ore e ore, ed è una giornata molto difficile a causa del comportamento inqualificabile del nostro governo. Rosso sta per la vergogna che proviamo, per la forza che auguro al padre di Eluana, per la dignità umana che questi politici prepotenti credono di poter calpestare, per lo spirito con cui le cose dovranno prima o poi cambiare, e per l’energia che noi ci metteremo. Si dice a volte che  le cose sono più scure che mai appena prima di tornare alla luce.

cose dolci: buon compleanno Susannah (e a proposito, belle foto dell’Inghilterra sotto la neve), stasera i Massimo Volume suonano in diretta sulle nostre frequenze, domani potete sentire Howe Gelb dei Giant Sand dal vivo da N, e io mi leggerò Netherland di Joseph O’Neill.

I wanted to post something strong and bright; today its’ been pouring with rain for hours on end, and it’s a very difficult day because of the unspeakable behaviour of our government. Red is for the shame we feel, for the strenght I wish for Eluana’s father, for the human dignity these high-handed politicians think they can trample down, for the spirit that will have to change things sooner or later, and for the energy that we’ll put in change. Sometimes it is said that things are at their darkest right before coming back to light.
