La bella e la bestia

Quando ho cominciato a guardare CSI, ero attratta dall’investigazione per le stesse ragioni per cui mi attrae la scrittura. In dieci anni, l’investigazione è stata sostituita dalla certezza della tecnologia. L’altra notte ho sognato un vecchissimo amore come se fosse in carne e ossa. Svegliandomi non ho resistito e l’ho cercato in Google. Così ho scoperto cosa sta facendo oggi, dopo quindici anni. Avevo un pacchetto per un mio vicino, consegnato per sbaglio al mio posto di lavoro. Mi sono resa conto che in tanti anni non avevo mai saputo che faccia avesse. L’ho cercato in Google, ed eccolo lì, una persona che ho incontrato qualche volta andando al mercato sotto casa. E’ la fine del mistero?

When I first started watching CSI, I was drawn to investigation for the same reasons that I’m drawn to writing. Over the last ten years, investigation has been substituted by the certainty of technology. The other night I dreamt about an old old love of mine as if he was real. Waking up, I couldn’t resist and Googled him. And found out was he’s doing now, after 15 years. I had this package for a neighbour, accidentally delivered to my working place. I realized I never knew what he looked like. Googled him, and there he was, somebody I’ve met a few times on my way to the local market. Is it the end of mistery?

Questa è dal chiosco sulla strada del caffè Fanelli a Soho, accanto a dove una volta c’era il Photographer’s Place. Quando al posto del negozio abbiamo trovato soltanto dei muratori al lavoro, siamo entrati nel caffè per chiedere informazioni, ma una giovane e ignara cameriera sorridente ci ha consigliato di recarci all’Apple store di fronte (dal quale eravamo appena arrivati) e di fare una ricerca su Google! Per buffo che fosse, l’abbiamo fatto, scoprendo così che la bella libreria fotografica, nonostante si trovi ancora sulle guide, aveva chiuso sette anni fa, ma non avete idea di quanto sia stato strano “cercarci” su Google a venti passi da dove volevamo andare… Sta chiudendo anche la storica Vesuvio Bakery, e sembra che gli amanti della “vecchia New York” non facciano in tempo a tenere il censimento di tutti i vecchi negozi che scompaiono. Pasqua mi ricorda sempre la mia nonna, che ci accoglieva da tutta l’Italia dopo aver cucinato per tre giorni, e per noi bambini c’erano sempre agnellini di zucchero e uova decorate. Per questo weekend di Pasqua ho in mente di riprendermi dalla tristezza, spero di trovarvi luminosi e nuovi la prossima settimana, buona Pasqua a tutti.

This is from the open window of Fanelli cafè in Soho, right next door to where the Photographers’ Place used to be. When we only found masons working and we got into the cafè to inquire about the shop, we were advised by a smiling and unknowing young waitress to flip into the Apple store across the street (that we just got out of) to “google” the address! Funny as it was, we did, finding out that the beautiful photo bookstore, despite still being on every guide, closed down seven years ago, but I can’t tell you how weird it was to “google” ourselves twenty steps away from where we wanted to go… The historic Vesuvio Bakery is closing down too and it looks like lovers of “old New York” can’t keep track of vanishing shops. Easter always reminds me of my Grandma, who used to have us at her house from all over Italy, after having cooked for three days, and there were always tiny sugar lambs and decorated eggs  for us kids. I have a plan for recovery from sadness this Easter weekend, I hope to find you all bright & new next week, happy Easter everyone.
