La bella e la bestia

Mi sono resa conto di non avervi mai detto com’era andata a finire con l’inaspettata cartuccia di Polaroid 600 che mi aveva trovato il nostro tecnico.  Be’, era più che scaduta (diciamo che più che altro era scaduta da dieci anni…) e si era tutta fusa in un unico blocco, molto appiccicoso, molto puzzolente, non se n’è potuto fare niente, salvo questo improbabile “tramonto” che si è formato nell’emulsione. Oggi mi sento parecchio come quel blocchetto, comunque so che passerà domani. In ogni caso, oggi sto diventando un po’ matta per le mie foto. Ho bisogno di un modo per vedere le foto in modo da poter usare le mani (sì, le mani, hai sentito bene, cara era digitale…) per far partire dei progetti. Sapete, tipo spargendo le foto su un tavolo. Spero di trovare un modo di stampare che non mi mandi anzitempo all’ospizio. Spero che l’Impossible Project sarà davvero pronto per l’anno nuovo con una nuova pellicola per la Polaroid. Spero di trovare qualunque sia quello che sto cercando quando faccio le foto. I realized I never told you what I had done about the unexpected Pola 600 pack that our tech found for me. Well, it was all more than expired (more like expired ten years ago…) and all stuck in one block, very sticky, very smelly, nothing good came out of it, except this unlikely “sunset” in the emulsion.  I feel very much like that block today, but I know it’s going to be okay tomorrow.  Anyway, I’m sort of going crazy over my photos today. I need a way to see photos so that I can use my hands (yes, my hands, dear digital age…) to establish projects. You know, like spreading prints on a table. I hope I can find a way to print that doesn’t end me up at the hospice. I hope the Impossible Project is really going to be ready by next year with a new film for Pola.  I hope I find whatever it is I am looking for when I take pictures. La città si sta svuotando – Eden. L’autista del tram stamattina sfoggiava una bella abbronzatura e una collanina di conchiglie. F. dice che le è piaciuta la serie degli scheletri fossili dell’AMNH, perciò questa è per lei. Sto rimuginando sull’idea di un vero progetto. Mi piace quando sono inchiodata in una buca e d’improvviso le idee cominciano a salire come bolle in superficie.

The city is emptying out – Eden.  Tram driver this morning was sporting a tan and a seashell necklace. F. says she enjoyed the AMNH fossil series, so this is for her. I’m mulling over the idea of a real project. I love when I’m stuck in a rut and suddenly ideas bubble up to the surface.

Alcune cose degne di nota nella nostra fettina di blogosfera: Stephanie racconta di come darsi delle limitazioni di colore la aiuti a concentrarsi su qualcosa di specifico nei suoi progetti, altrimenti si trova bloccata per troppa scelta – questo mi fa suonare un campanello, come ho visto anche con gli studenti della Nuova Accademia di belle Arti di Milano, avere dei limiti nei progetti creativi fa bene, ogni volta che mi perdo di qua e di là scrivendo il mio libro (l’argomento è vaaaaasto) mi accorgo che devo solo attenermi strettamente al tema che avevo scelto fin dall’inizio, e questo aiuta molto. Amanda sta invitando i suoi lettori a spedirle foto delle loro macchine fotografiche e di come espongono e raccolgono le loro foto, molto carino! Mav è tornata, il suo nuovo progetto si chiama The card society, andate a vederlo con i vostri occhi, bellissimo come sempre. E, già che ci siamo, Camilla sta raccontando i progressi di Morran nella convalescenza, io e la B siamo stati un po’ preoccupati e ci è tornato il sorriso :) e oggi ho un pranzo importantissssimo –  incrociate le dita per me!!!

A few things on the web that are worth considering: Stephanie tells about colour restrictions helping her sort out what to focus on in her projects, otherwise she gets stuck with too much choice - this rings a bell, as I have experimented also with the students of the New Academy of Fine Arts in Milan  limitations in creative efforts are good, everytime I spread myself all over the place in writing my book (the subject is vaaaast) I realize I only have to strictly stick with the theme I chose in the first place, and that helps a lot. Amanda is inviting her readers to send in pictures of their cameras and their photos displays, very cute! Mav is back, her new project is called The card society, go there yourselves, it’s as beautiful as ever. And, by the way, Camilla is tracking Morran’s recovery from surgery, myself and the B have been quite worried and now back to smile :)  and I have a veeeery important lunch today- cross your fingers for me, please!

Sono un rottame, ma è stata un gran bella festa :) Radio Popolare ha festeggiato i trent’anni di London Calling dei Clash con un grande concerto al Magnolia, che comprendeva uno dei gruppi che mi sono più cari, i Casino Royale, che hanno suonato per un locale talmente stracolmo che mi ci è voluta una certa fatica per arrivare ai piedi del palco. Ho dormito 4 ore e stamattina ho fatto una seduta di brainstorming con i miei studenti. Rientro alla radio in un’assurda calura, due ore in onda, di nuovo alla scrivania. In un libro che sto leggendo c’è questo tizio che segue un corso di fotografia, e gli fanno scalare una montagna per scattare una foto di un’aquila. Be’, immagino che ieri sera Ali sia stato la mia aquila.

Knackered, but it was a great party :) Radio Popolare celebrated 30 years of London Calling by The Clash with a great show at Magnolia’s in Milan, including one of the bands that are dearest to my heart, Casino Royale, playing for an incredibly packed venue where it took me some effort to get to the feet of the stage. Slept 4 hours and met my students for an intense brainstorming session in the morning. Back to radio station in unbelievable heatwave, on air for two hours, back to desk. In a book I’m reading there’s this guy who takes a photography course, and he has to climb a mountain to get a snap of an eagle.  Well, I guess last night Ali was my eagle.

Ho giocato con la macchina fotografica ieri sera; ho risolto alcuni problemi che avevano bisogno di qualche aggiustamento, ho fatto qualche scoperta, e probabilmente ho trovato il mio modo per smangiucchiare un po’ di perfezione (quella della macchina, ovviamente). Un modo è la sovraesposizione. E’ più lontana dalla realtà ma decisamente più vicina al modo in cui io percepisco le cose. Oggi la macchina fotografica è come se fosse nuova, anche se sono convinta che poi sta tutto in cosa fotografiamo. Buon fine a settimana tutti.

Played with camera last night; solved a few problems which needed adjustments, made some discoveries in the process, probably found my way to nib away at perfection (the camera’s, that is). Overexposure is one way. It’s further from reality but definitely closer to the way I perceive things. Camera feels new again, though I’m still convinced that it’s all in what we see and photograph. Happy weekend everyone.

Avevo bisogno di qualcosa che mi tirasse su il morale, e per questo si può sempre contare sulla B. Le difficoltà pratiche mi infuriano perché sembrano portarsi via tutta la poesia, ma so che non deve essere nessariamente così. La Sposa ha avuto la sua memorabile festa  di addio al nubilato su un tram che noi amiche abbiamo affittato sabato (spero che non possiate mai vederne le foto!); la seconda bozza del capitolo 5 è conclusa, e tecnicamente il capitolo 6 mi porterà esattamente a metà della seconda bozza totale (peccato che il capitolo 6 sia ordinato come l’inferno, al momento); con l’arrivo del caldo la casa ha subito la sua trasformazione estiva, e ho allestito un pannello di miei ritratti in bianco e nero di amici e affetti. La lista n.3 dovrebbe essere pronta per domani, per festeggiare i primi sei mesi del blog – passate una bella settimana, e non dimenticate di infillarci dentro un po’ di poesia, qualunque cosa accada.

I needed some morale boost today, and you can always count on the B for that. Practical difficuties anger me because they seem to take all away the poetry, but I know it doesn’t have to be so. The Bride had the most incredible hen’s night on a tram we girls hired last Saturday night (hopefully you’re never going to get to see photographs!); second draft of chapter 5 is over and technically chapter 6 will take me halfway in the general second draft (a pity chapter 6 is tidy like hell at the moment); and with the heat rising the house has undergone its summery transformation, and I put up a moodboard in the kitchen with my b&w portraits of  friends and loved ones.  List n.3 should be ready tomorrow, so we can celebrate 6 months – have a nice week, and don’t forget to inject a bit of poetry in it, no matter what.

Per me è la regina dei fiori, anche più delle rose. Questa è la mia prima peonia della stagione, prima che la B se la mangiucchi.  Qua ci stiamo aggrappando al sole, non si sa mai quando la primavera potrebbe tradirci.  Ho pasticciato con la macchina fotografica, Av non va bene, Tv non va bene, e la modalità manuale vera e propria mi manda in confusione perché sembra che la macchina faccia sempre qualche correzione non richiesta.  Sicuramente sono io che ho qualcosa di sbagliato, ma sento la mancanza degli anelli numerati. Nel frattempo mi invaghisco di un nuovo giocattolo, e subito devo ricordarmi di quanto è lungo e costoso sviluppare la pellicola e fare le scansioni.  Sto mantenendo il ritmo sul capitolo 5, e posso dirvi una cosa: ricavare una seconda stesura da una prima stesura è come ragionare col proprio gemello deficiente.

Ps l’altra sera a Philadelphia B ha calpestato il mio cuore sotto i suoi dolci stivali… guardate qui. Ho sempre avuto questa convinzione che per un secondo nell’universo, intorno al 1979, lui e Joe Strummer siano stati lo stesso uomo.

She is to me the queen of flowers, even more than roses. This is the first peony of the season, before the B starts chewing on it. We are clinging to the sun here, you never know when spring may betray you.  I messed a bit with my camera, Av doesn’t suit me, Tv doesn’t suit me either, and the proper manual mode confuses me because it seems  the camera is always trying to unnecessarily compensate. I’m sure its something wrong with me, but I really miss the numbered rings. In the meantime I develop a fancy for a new toy and soon have to remind myself  of how long and expensive is to develop film and scan photos. Keeping the pace on chapter 5, and I can tell you something: getting a second draft from a first draft is like reasoning with your own imbecile twin.

PS the other night in Philadelphia B has trampled my heart under his sweet sweet boots… have a look here. I always had this convinction that for one second in universe, circa 1979, B and Joe Strummer were the same man.

Il tavolo è tornato bianco, e ho scoperto che tutta la tavolozza di colori era già in questo piatto.  La B. manifesta apertamente il suo disappunto per tutto questo bricolage infrasettimanale. Sento di essere entrata nella fase 2 della scoperta della mia macchina fotografica, devo sperimentare un po’ con l’esposizione e vedere cosa succede. Se anche voi vi sentite pigri, vi segnalo la rivista più pigra del mondo, la mirabile The Idler.

The kitchen table is back to white, and I’ve found that all the colour palette I needed was already on this plate. The B. shows his open contempt for this midweek DIY. I feel I have entered phase 2 in the discovery of my camera, I have to experiment with exposure and see what happens. If you feel lazy too, I direct you to the laziest magazine ever, the awesome The Idler.

Ancora un po’ di mal di mare, sto stilando la Lista per domani e controllando i voli per vedere B. a Stoccolma (mi piace molto la Trilogia della Recessione che sta facendo in questi giorni negli Stati Uniti), sono irrequieta e tutto mi sembra un po’ stagnante, penso che userò le vacanze di Pasqua per fare quello che facevano le nonne: pulizie di Pasqua! Ho bisogno di cambiare alcune cose in casa, con tutta quella luce che arriva adesso, e di torturarmi un altro po’ al computer per spingere il mio libro da uno stato a un’altro. La B. passa la maggior parte del tempo sul suo davanzale, e adora quando i vicini lo salutano. Come anticipato mi sono presa una copia di Christian the Lion al Barnes & Noble di Union Square, e una delle caratteristiche salienti del cucciolo di leone che abitava sul retro di un negozio di mobili a Londra nel ‘69 era la sua assoluta convinzione di essere superiore a chiunque avesse intorno – in modo nobile, in modo gentile, con condiscendenza, ma comunque superiore – insomma, il re della savana.  Be’, su una scala più piccina, devo dire che la B. ha tutta l’aria di essere convinto che tutto quello che accade sia stato progettato per la sua curiosità e il suo divertimento. E’ buffo, ma ogni volta che lo noto mi dà una grande gioia. Sto sperimentando un po’ con le mie foto di New York,  potete vedere un set abbastanza abbondante sul mio Flickr, anche se mancano le foto a cui tengo di più, che sono i ritratti, quelli me li godrò a casa. Quella qui sopra è una delle mie preferite, spero che vi piaccia ;)

Still a little bit seasick, I’m planning The List for tomorrow and checking flights to see B. in Stockholm (I love the Recession Trilogy he’s playing these days in the US!), I’m restless and everything feels kind of stuck now, I think I’ll use Easter holidays to do exactly what Grandmas used to do: Easter cleaning! Need a bit of change in the house, with all that light coming in, and more brain-torturing on my computer to shift my book from one state to the next. The B spends most of his time on his windowsill and loves neighbours greeting him: as I anticipated, I bought myself a copy of Christian the Lion at Union Square’s Barnes & Noble, and one of the most notable features of the lion cub who used to live in the back of a furniture shop in London in ‘69 is his absolute convinction of being superior to anyone else around him – nobly so, kindly so, condescendingly so, but superior nonetheless – king of the savannah, that is. Well, on a tinier scale, I have to say that the B. looks pretty much convinced anything that happens was planned for his curiosity and amusement. Funnily enough, it gives me a great joy anytime I notice.  I’m experimenting a little bit with my New York photos, you can see quite an extensive set at my Flickr, though missing the photos I care most for, that is, individual portraits, something I am going to enjoy at home. This one above is one my favourites, I hope you enjoy it ;)

E’ vero che in questi giorni non mi riesce facile niente, tranne forse controllare un percorso in metropolitana sulla mappa di NY, dove sono stata soltanto una volta, e trovarla facile come se fosse casa mia, ma in realtà è NY che ha un suo modo di essere facile.  Ma è ironico, quasi tutti i giorni ho la possibilità di parlare con qualcuno che ha appena pubblicato un libro. Potete scommettere che anche loro hanno avuto la loro parte di intoppi, eppure una volta che la lotta è finita, parlano della scrittura come di una corsa senza inciampi. Ho trovato un bel blog sulla scrittura da Frootbat, potete leggerla qui. Facendo lo slalom fra i problemi della macchina fotografica, ho scattato qualche foto al dolce Roberto Angelini venerdì scorso quando ha tenuto il suo bellissimo concerto da noi a Radio Popolare, potete vederle nell’apposito set sul mio Flickr. Davvero niente di speciale – so cosa fanno i musicisti, li osservo e sono cresciuta con loro, ma ci vorrà un sacco di tempo prima che riesca a fare loro delle foto decenti mentre suonano. Sia scrivendo che fotografando, ho ancora qualcosa a un palmo dal naso che non riesco a vedere.

Really, nothing comes easy to me these days, except maybe checking up on the map some subway route in NYC where I’ve been only once, and finding it as easy as if it was my hometown. But then, it’s NY that has a way of being easy.  But it’s funny, almost everyday I get to talk to people who have just published a book. You can bet they went through a little bit of struggle themselves, but now that the struggle is over, they talk about writing as if it was a smooth ride all the way. I have found a nice writer’s blog in Frootbat, you can read her here. Dodging a few problems with my camera, I took some shots of the sweet Roberto Angelini last Friday night when he held his wonderful show here at Radio Popolare, you can check them up as a set on my Flickr. Nothing special, really, I know what musicians do, I study them and I grew up around them, but it’s going to take a long while before I can take decent pictures of them playing.  Both in writing and shooting, I have something under my nose that I still can’t see.
