La bella e la bestia

che stare in vacanza per un mese intero era una cosa che non mi succedeva da forse dieci anni, un’esperienza in sé, un posto dove sono stata in grado di ritrovare il mio ritmo, recuperare il sonno perduto, scoprire cosa succede senza web, e fare una lista di lussi personali: tanto sonno, tempo libero, vagabondare in giro, fotografare, uscire a cena, nessuna fretta, niente pendolarismo, tanto leggere e scrivere, fiori freschi, camminare, cucinare, il caffè di casa dalla moka, amore e amicizia, mettere i progetti in prospettiva, dire sempre di sì. La noia non esiste.

E voi, come siete stati durante le vacanze?

that being on holiday for a whole month was something that didn’t happen to me for maybe the last 10 years, an experience in itself, a place where I was able to find my rhythm, regain lost sleep, find out what happens with no web connection at all, make a list of luxuries: plenty of sleep, free time,wandering about, taking photographs, dining out, no hurry, no commuting, plenty of reading and writing, walking, fresh flowers, cooking, home coffee from the moka, love & friendship, putting projects in perspective, always saying yes. Bore doesn’t exist.

And what about you guys? What have you found out during holidays?

Una foto che attira il sole. A volte mi chiedo perché gli esseri umani si siano creati un modo di vivere che prevede che vadano a lavorare anche quando il tempo dice a chiare lettere: stai a casa, mescola qualcosa di caldo sul fuoco, leggiti un libro a letto.

A sun-attracting pic. Sometimes I wonder why human beings have created a way of life that sees them getting out to work when the weather clearly says: stay home, stir something hot, read a book in bed.

Una ripresa molto lenta…

A very slow recovery…

Ho trovato tre soluzioni a cose che pensavo ingestibili, seguendo la buona vecchia regola di spezzettare i problemi in pezzetti più gestibili, affrontandoli uno per volta. Il sollievo è palpabile. Uno dei buoni propositi per il nuovo anno è come essere efficiente senza essere stupidamente diligente, come dare un taglio al multitasking, e come limitare gli obbiettivi stabilendo alcuni limiti. Non scrivere tutto, perché una sola cosa parla per il tutto. Non fotografare tutto, le mie foto preferite di quest’anno sono tutte di cose e volti immersi nella luce naturale e laterale che arriva da una finestra – la vecchia lezione di Vermeer – e mi atterrò a quello. Un buon modo per chiamare questa mia settimana sarebbe la Grande Attesa. Ma so dai giacinti che anche quando sembrano congelati nel tempo stanno lavorando per raggiungere il loro pieno potenziale.

I have found three solutions to things I thought unsolvable, following the great rule of chopping tasks into manageable bits, and facing them one at the time. The relief is palpable. One of the great propositions for the new year is how to be effective without being stupidly diligent, how to cut down multitasking, how to put a limit to objectives by setting boundaries. Not to write everything, just one thing often speaks for the whole. Not to take pictures of everything, my favourite pics these year were all of something basked in lateral, natural light from a window – the old Vermeer lesson – and I’ll stick to that. A good name for this week of mine is The Great Wait. But I know from hyacinths that even when they look frozen in time they are still working towards their full potential.
