Ho saputo solo ieri che il meraviglioso Willy De Ville è mancato la scorsa settimana. Con lui ho fatto la prima intervista della mia vita, a vent’anni, e ancora oggi la sua gentilezza di quel giorno mi protegge. Mi ha aperto la porta di un intero mondo. Oggi abito a pochi isolati da dove avvenne quell’incontro, e ci penso spesso. Ogni volta che l’ho incontrato, negli anni, mi ha sempre colpito come l’essere umano più romantico che abbia mai conosciuto, e sempre, senza eccezioni, genuino. In questi giorni sono circondata da amore e dolore. E’ ovunque io guardi, e mi sta cambiando una volta per tutte. E’ tenero come un neonato, e velenoso come il morso di un serpente.

I only got to know yesterday that the awesome Willy De Ville has passed away last week. He was my first interview ever when I was 20, and I’m still basking in his kindness today. He gave me the keys to a whole world. I live today a few blocks away from the place of that first encounter, and I think of it often. Whenever I’d meet him in the following years, I was always struck by his being the most truly romantic human I ever met, and genuine without fail. I’m surrounded by pain and love these days. It’s everywhere I look, and it’s definitely changing me for good. It’s as tender as a newborn and as poisonous as a snake bite.

Non è stata esattamente una vacanza, ma ha funzionato per farmi finire gli ultimi capitoli del mio libro. Non mi ero mai sentita così piena di energia e risoluta a procedere nonostante il caldo e alcune parti veramente ingarbugliate. E’ come se il libro avesse cominciato a rotolare a valle da solo e io non avessi che da seguirlo. Gli amici hanno brindato, è stato bello. Adesso sono alla terza stesura, che significa cesellare parecchio e tagliare circa il 40% di quello che ho scritto. Ma è una bella sensazione. Oggi torno alla vita reale –  con un dubbio che mi assilla, su cosa poi sia reale e cosa no.

It wasn’t exactly holidaying, but it was good enough to finish the last chapters of my book. Never before I have felt so full of energy and resolute and kept going so easily, despite the heat and some parts being really jumbled. The book just kind of snowballed and I only had to follow it. There were a lot of toasts from friends, it felt nice. I am now into Draft 3, which means a lot of polishing and cutting almost 40% of what I’ve written. But it just feels good. I’m now back to real life - actually with a nagging doubt about what’s real and what’s not.

Ultimo giorno prima delle vacanze, e come sempre accade va tutto a rotoli: la B mi ha morso al braccio in una interpretazione da Oscar del Gatto Selvaggio, il frigo è vuoto, gli amici hanno il muso, niente riesce facile – PERO’: sono pronta per la mia sana tabella di marcia sulla scrittura del libro, nel frattempo auguro a tutti voi buone vacanze e se fate un salto sul blog vedrete qualche post qua e là. Last day before the holidays, and as usually everything is crumbling down: the B has bitten my arm in a full interpretation of the Wild Cat, the fridge is empty, friends are grumpy, nothing comes easy – BUT: I am ready for my healthy writing schedule for the next 16 days, I wish you all great holidays in the meantime, and if you’ll come to visit you’ll see random posts. Passata la settimana di furore, si torna alla normalità, si fa per dire :) R&D si sposano, congratulazioni, ragazzi! Recuperato il sonno perduto, un po’ meno la testa (è un’estate mooolto strana…) adesso è ora di darsi da fare; ieri ho riletto tutta la seconda stesura del libro e mi sono messa le mani nei capelli! C’è ancora tantissimo da fare, le vacanze saranno dedicate a questo -  caldo permettendo – e così farò la mia prima pausa dal blog a partire dalla settimana prossima.  C’è qualcuno di voi che utilizzerà le vacanze per fare qualcosa che non riesce a fare di solito?

The week of turmoil has passed, back to normal, so to say :) R&D are getting married, congratulations, guys! Made up for lost sleep. not so much for my head (it’s a veeery strange summer…) now it’s time to roll up my sleeves; yesterday I went through the whole second draft of my book and I was desperate! There is still so much work to do, holidays will be devoted to this – the heat notwithstanding – so I’m going to take my first leave from the blog from next week. Any of you using their holidays to do something they can’t seem to do the rest of the year?

Il Grande Tuono è passato, spazzando le pianure. Ci lascia puliti, rinvigoriti, in preda all’incanto. Tanta fede nel potere di trasformazione dell’arte, così splendidamente ben riposta, ti riconcilia col mondo, anche se ti ricorda che il mondo è ancora difficile, e tutto da cambiare. C’è stato tanto affetto, ritrovamenti, chilometri e chilometri di autostrada, sms, telefonate, sigarette e patatine, sonno, sogni – attraverso un paese di stellare bellezza, che però si merita per tre volte una canzone antirazzista come 41 shots.

The Big Thunder has passed, sweeping the plains. It leaves us rinsed, strenghtened, enchanted. Such faith in the transformative power of art, so beautifully entrusted, reconciles us with the world, though reminding us that the world is still a difficult place, to be thoroughly changed. There was much love, reunions, miles and miles of highways, texting, calls, cigarettes and chips, sleepy eyed, dreaming – through this country of stellar beauty that still deserves though - 3 times ina  row – an anti-racist song like 41 shots.

Quando ne vale la pena, c’è sempre, sempre, più di quello che si vede.

When it’s worth it, there is always, always, more than meets the eye.

Un weekend bellissimo, ho tanto da postarvi su Il paese è reale e Riva e andare via e incontrare di persona Simo Capecchi, ci vorrà tutta la settimana per raccontarvelo. Il lago era ventoso di giorno e tranquillo di sera, e abbiamo trovato un giardino segreto che portava alla spiaggia e questo posticino sotto le palme, il luogo ideale per scrivere o disegnare o baciarsi. La sera abbiamo provato a rientrare dal giardino ma abbiamo trovato il cancello chiuso. Solo più tardi, riprovandoci, mi sono resa conto di aver tirato e spinto, mentre il cancelletto era di quelli scorrevoli. Mi è tornato in mente un bellissimo disegno di Saul Steinberg di cui una volta ridevo molto con una mia cara amica che non vedo da tanto tempo. Oggi l’ho cercato per farvelo vedere, e l’ho trovato sul suo blog. Non è una cosa magica? Quasi tutto funziona così. Non c’è ragione di spingere e tirare. E poi, i giardini segreti hanno un certo modo di aprirsi da soli quando meno te lo aspetti.

A beautiful weekend, I have a lot to post about Il paese è reale and Riva and going away and meeeting Simo Capecchi, it’s going to take all week to sum it up. The lake was stormy by day and peaceful by night, and we found a secret garden leading to the beach and this spot under the palms, the ideal place where to write or draw or kiss. At night we tried our way back through the garden and found the gate closed. Only later, trying again, I realized I had pushed and pulled, while the small gate was actually sliding sideways. This reminded me of a beautiful drawing by Saul Steinberg I used to laugh a lot about with a dear friend of mine I haven’t seen in a long time. Today I looked for it to show it to you, and I found it on her blog. Isn’t it just a magic thing? Quite everything works the same way. There is no reason to push and pull. Moreover, secret gardens have a way of opening up when you least expect it.

La Mole Sister ha fatto questo per me con le sue mani. E’ una specie di tradizione di famiglia,  e rappresenta lei. E’ una delle cose che mi danno gioia oggi, insieme al fatto di rovesciare in positivo una situazione negativa, finire la seconda stesura del capitolo 6 e muovermi veloce sul capitolo 7, trovare un buon libro nuovo da leggere, pensare alle vacanze, aspettare i temporali, pulire la B che si è impiastricciata col miele a colazione, fare progetti per il Giants Stadium, ascoltare il discorso di Barack Obama oggi al Cairo, che visto dalla nostra situazione in Italia è stato parecchio simile a guardare Star Trek. E a voi cosa dà gioia oggi?

The Mole Sister handmade this for my birthday. It’s a sort of  family tradition, it represents herself. It’s one of the things that bring me joy. Along with turning a bad situation into a good one, finishing the second draft of chapter 6 and moving quickly into chapter 7, finding a new good book to read, thinking of holidays, waiting for rainstorms, washing breakfast honey from the B, making plans for Giants Stadium, hearing Barack Obama’s speech in Cairo today, which from our situation in Italy was very much like watching Star Trek. What brings you joy today?

Oggi ho letto che gli scienziati sono convinti che produciamo col cuore onde di energia per diversi metri intorno a noi, e in numero 5000 volte superiore a quelle che produciamo col cervello. Quello che è strano è che per la maggior parte del tempo i moti del nostro cuore li subiamo, invece di imprimere loro una direzione. L’arte forse ci aiuta a dare a questo caos così potente una forma che possiamo condividere. Quello che continuo a imparare da M. è netto e cristallino, energia pura, la disciplina che permette di imbrigliare l’ispirazione, il gusto folle per il gioco, l’uso di tutto il corpo per produrre ciò che cuore e mente progettano – è molto bello.

I read today that scientists believe our hearts produce energy in waves around them for some metres, in a quantity 5000 times bigger than the energy produced by our brains. What is funny is that most of the time we sort of put up with what our hearts feel instead of directing it. Art probably help us shape up this powerful chaos into a form we can share. What I keep on learning from M. is sharp and crisp, pure energy, the discipline to rein in inspiration, the crazy taste for play, the use of all your body to produce what heart and mind design- it feels so good.

Questo è per la Mole Sister, che sta tessendo la sua nuova tela, in bocca al lupo sorella, metà del risultato sta nel dare inizio al processo. E’ anche per F., a cui piacciono le foto “rotonde”, e per S., gran bel pranzo! E per voi che capitate in questo blog, qual’è il vostro primo segno d’estate?
