Imparando un po’ di zen dalla B.

L’altra sera ho messo su Let it be. I Beatles me li ricordo ogni volta perfetti, e mi sono così abituata ad album che sembrano fatti dai robot che resto sempre sorpresa dai loro piccoli errori, dalle minuscole sporcature. Mi trascinano con loro nella stanza dove stanno suonando, ancora giovani e stupendi. Anche se è stata registrata 40 anni fa, la musica sta accadendo adesso. Sto ascoltando anche il nuovo, impressionante capitolo degli American Recordings di Johnny Cash, il numero VI. Canta con un piede sull’orlo della tomba, la voce che gli trema di nostalgia e di stupore. Abbiamo bisogno di un’arte che sia un po’ ammaccata e sporca. La fragilità è quello che ci rende umani.

The other night I put on Let it be. I always remember the Beatles as perfect, and so used I’ve become to robot-like perfect sounding records that I am invariably caught by surprise when I hear all the little mistakes, the tiny imperfections. They draw me in the room where they’re playing, still young and beautiful. Though it was recorded 40 years ago, the music is happening now. I am also listening to the new wondrous chapter of Johnny Cash’s American Recordings, n.VI. He sings with his foot on the brink of his grave, his voice trembling with longing and awe. We need an art that is a bit bruised and dirty. Frailty is what makes us human.

In questi giorni ho attinto a tutte le mie energie e ai miei trucchi per sconfiggere la paura, per cui oggi sono un sacco vuoto. Ma il libro mi danza intorno, come la B per festeggiare un giorno extra da passare a casa insieme.

I have drawn from all my energy and fear-defeating tricks these last few days, so I guess I’m just empty like  a sack today. But the book is waltzing around me, like the B does to celebrate an extra day home together.

Dal numero di orecchie sulle pagine di questo libro potete capire quanto l’ho amato! E’ troppo tempo che non vi faccio la lista dei libri, dovendo scrivere ho letto meno del solito, ma eccola qua/ By the number of dogears on the pages of this book, you can tell how much I loved it!  It’s been too long since I last posted my booklist, being writing I have read less than usual, but here it is.

1. Barry Lopez, “Sogni artici”, Arctic Dreams – un libro meraviglioso che ho finalmente riletto in originale, un’esplorazione minuta dei ghiacci dell’Artico, della sua gente, dei suoi animali, l’atteggiamento coloniale dei grandi esploratori, gli scienziati di oggi, le mappe fisiche e quelle dell’immaginazione; un capolavoro assoluto della creative non fiction e un libro pieno di speranza per una visione sostenibile della terra e del futuro/a wonderful book that I finally re-read in English, a minute  exploration of the ice of the Arctic, of its people and animals, of the colonial attitude of explorers, of modern day scientists, of physical maps and maps of the imagination; an absolute masterpiece of creative non fiction and a book full of hope for a sustainable vision of the land and the future.

2. Marylinne Robinson, Home – il seguito di Gilead o meglio, la stessa storia che riguardava il reverendo Ames raccontata però in casa del vecchio pastore Boughton, soprattutto nei dialoghi in cucina tra la figlia Gloria e il figliol prodigo Jack. Mi ha inchiodato, indimenticabile/the follow up to Gilead, or better, the same story that there was told from the reverend Ames household point of view, now told in the house of old pastor Boughton, especially by way of kitchen dialogues between his daughter Gloria and his prodigal son Jack. It nailed me, unforgettable.

3. Angela Pneuman, “Rimedi casalinghi”, Home remedies - raccolta di racconti incentrati soprattutto sull’inafferrabile mondo interiore di ragazzine adolescenti, molto azzeccati, difficile non identificarsi/a collection of short stories, centered mainly on the fleeting intimate world of teenage girls, very focused, hard not to relate.

4. Valentina Agostinis, ” Londra chiama – otto scrittori raccontano la loro metropoli”/no translation available, bellissimo ritratto corale delle inquietudini contemporanee di Londra attraverso interviste originali con JG Ballard, Monica Ali, Nick Hornby, Gautam Malkami, Iain Sinclair, Will Self, Hari Kunzru e Hanif Kureishi – multietnicità, urbanistica, psicogeografia /a wonderful portrait of the contemporary disquiet of London by way of original interviews with JG Ballard, Monica Ali, Nick Hornby, Gautam Malkami, Iain Sinclair, Will Self, Hari Kunzru and Hainf Kureishi – multiethnicity, urban planning, psychogeography.

5. Gad Lerner, “Scintille”, no translation available - l’autobiografia familiare del giornalista che si mette sulle tracce dei fantasmi dei suoi famigliari ebrei in Europa, Libano e Israele; doloroso, coraggioso e magnetico, la dimostrazione che un nuovo cittadino del mondo può esistere/the ethnical autobiography of a journalist and tv personality who chases the ghosts of his Jewish ancestors all through Europe, Israel, Lebanon. Painful,  bold and magnetic, it proves that such a thing as a citizen of the world can now exists.

6. Daniyal Mueenuddin, “Altre stanze, altre meraviglie”/In other rooms, other wonders – racconti assolutamente magistrali ambientati nel Pakistan moderno/absolute masterly short stories set in modern Pakistan

7. Matt Mason, “Punk capitalismo”/The pirate’s dilemma - tutto quello che avreste sempre voluto sapere su pirateria, contrabbando, mixaggi, campionamenti, furti, taglia e incolla, scaricamenti e come battere il copyright- e poi, la strada contro le grandi aziende/all you ever wanted to know about piracy, bootlegging, mixing, sampling, stealing, cutting & pasting, downloading, defying copyright, plus the street vs the big companies

Ieri sono rimasta impigliata in una folla di ragazzine che urlavano per il loro idolo pop. Erano più assordanti dei tifosi del Chelsea lì vicino. Ho pensato, se solo lo volessero, potrebbero fare una rivoluzione.

Yesterday I got caght in a screaming crowd of teenager pop fans. They were more deafening than Chelsea fans nearby. I thought, if they only wanted to, they could start a revolution.

La cosa interessante della reputazione è che dopo aver tanto lottato per fartene una, poi sta soprattutto a te rispettarla. Per quanto sembri passato di moda.

The interesting thing about reputation is that after you have been striving for so long to establish one, then it is up to you to respect it. As out of fashion as it may sound.

E’ passato quasi un anno e fa ancora male come se fosse stato ieri.

It’s been almost one year and it still hurts as if it was yesterday.

Le foto di questa settimana saranno tutte quadretti dell’ordine che ho fatto nel fine settimana, nei ritagli intorno al lavoro sul libro. Riordinate carte e bollette, e anche il mio schedario, ho fatto posto per le future stampe delle foto, le foto da incorniciare, gli album da preparare su moleskine – tutto rimandato a quando il libro sarà finito. Questo è l’album sull’ultimo viaggio a New York, piccole stampe wallet a colori su pagine medie da aquarello, due per pagina.

Pics for this week will all come from the uncluttering I did in the weekend, in the few moments free from revising the book. Old papers and bills well in order, my writing files too, I proceeded to make room for the future photo prints, the prints to be framed, the ones to be made in moleskine albums – all delayed to when the book will be finished. This is the album of the last trip to NY, small wallet color prints on medium watercolour pages, two for each page.
