Ci sono cose selvagge che possono crescere soltanto a modo loro. Prendono la loro forma da sole, seguono un loro progetto, spezzano l’asfalto e i marciapiedi e i muri di mattoni per essere solo quello che possono, e nient’altro. E non puoi fermarle, non puoi tagliarle, non puoi piegarle, non puoi stancarle, e nemmeno fare a meno di ammirarle.

There are wild things that can only grow the way they want to. They take their shape, they follow their own design, they break asphalt and pavements and brick walls to be all they can be and nothing else. And you cannot stop them, nor cut them, nor bend them, nor wear them out, nor help admiring them.

Ogni anno a metà marzo aspetto che la magnolia nudiflora giapponese sotto la finestra della mia camera da letto esploda di fiori grossi e tondi come piattini. Un giorno ha ancora i rami nudi e grossi boccioli verdi, un giorno se non stai attento è già fiorita, una mattina ti svegli e i grandi petali bianchi sono già sparsi sul prato e sui rami stanno spuntando le foglie che terrà per tutta l’estate. E ogni anno a metà marzo la fotografo nel suo abito sontuoso. Quest’anno il tempo dei fiori pieni è stato un unico singolo giorno –  enorme, trionfale, ed è stata una gioia riuscire a non perdermelo.

Every year around half March I find myself waiting for the big Japanese magnolia under my bedroom window to burst up with flowers as big and round as saucers. One day she still has naked branches and big green gems, one other day if you don’t pay attention she’s already in bloom, and then one day the white petals are lying on the grass and the branches are covering up with the leaves she will keep the whole summer through. And every year around half March I take a picture of her in her majestic dress. This year the time of full open flowers was just one single day – enormous, triumphant, and I’m joyful I didn’t miss it.

Credevo che ormai non sarebbe mai uscito, e invece eccolo qua: è “Il libro dell’altra gente” , una raccolta di racconti della scuola McSweeneys, curata da Zadie Smith. E’ un libro a cui voglio bene perché mi ha dato la possibilità di tradurre una delle mie scrittrici preferite, A.L.Kennedy, e il mio fumettista preferito in assoluto, Chris Ware (che comunque è di poche parole).
