Ricomincio Alaska, che è il miglior posto dove potrei trovarmi mentre cambia il mondo.

I’m starting Alaska again, which is the best place I could be while the world is changing.

Un giorno dell’estate scorsa L mi ha portato due di questi al lavoro. Mi ha detto “mia nonna li ha fatti per te, perché ti ascolta sempre alla radio”.

One day last summer L brought me two of these at work, he said “my grandma made them for you, because she always listens to you on the radio”.

Ho appena finito di leggere Freedom di Jonathan Franzen. Romanzo immenso. Domani ne parlo ad Alaska, ore 12, Radio Popolare, e in replica alle 21.

I just finished reading Jonathan’s Franzen Freedom. Gigantic novel. I’m talking about it on air tomorrow, Alaska at 12 am and 9 pm, Radio Popolare.

Un ascoltatore o ascoltatrice di Alaska mi ha twittato un link a un video meraviglioso di Bjork che non ricordavo più, “Bachelorette”. Temo che succederà anche a me come accade a lei nella seconda parte del video, quando il suo editore si trasforma in una pianta e le righe del suo libro si cancellano finché tutte le pagine non diventano bianche. Ma per ora siamo ancora nella prima parte del video, quando ogni cosa è Alice, meraviglia, una magia incastonata nell’altra.

One Alaska listener twitted me a link to a wonderful Bjork’s video I had forgotten, the one for “Bachelorette”. I fear that the same that happens to her in the second part of the video will happen to me, when her publisher becomes a tree and the lines of her book vanish one by one until all the pages turn white. But for now we are still in the first part of the video, when everything is Alice, wonderland, each magic embedded in the next.

Questo è per Nick Cave, che ho avuto il privilegio di intervistare oggi per il suo nuovo romanzo La morte di Bunny Munro. Si percepisce la sua presenza dalla parte opposta di una stanza.  E’ una creatura luminosa, un concentrato di intelligenza e signorilità e carisma.

This is for Nick Cave, whom I’ve had the privilege to interview today abour his new novel The death of Bunny Munro. You can sense his presence at the opposite side of a room. He’s a luminous being, a bundle of  intelligence and gentlemanly manners and charisma.

Nonostante la tentazione di lamantarmi per le piccole cose (conoscete la sensazione), sono molto molto viva. Piena fino all’orlo di quel che ci vuole per condurre il libro al suo ineluttabile completamento (oh mi mancherà scriverlo, credevo che avrei detestato il processo, per scoprire invece che è proprio quello di per sé la sola e bella ricompensa), di portare Alaska a una forma soddisfacente, di occuparmi delle mie foto e dei diari e dei progetti futuri, e mi sento come se stessi masticando con gusto  gli amici e le persone amate – le loro voci, i loro abbracci, il loro modo di ridere.

Despite the temptation to complain for tiny things (you know the feeling), I am very much alive. Full to the brim with running the book to its inescapable ending (oh I’ll miss writing  it, I thought I ‘d despise the process, to find instead that that is the very and one reward in itself), of running Alaska to a satisfying shape, of taking care of my pictures and diaries and future projects, and I feel like I’m chewing on friends and loved ones – their tasty voices, embraces, ways of laughing.

E’ bello essere a casa, o, come l’ha messa Bruce nel New Jersey, “è bello giocare in cortile” :) La B è così felice che si arrampica dappertutto, me compresa, e mentre ero via ha finito di mettere la pelliccetta dell’inverno. Ho visto un artista straordinario concentrarsi sulle performance negli stadi a sessant’anni come se fossero club a venticinque. “Racing in the streets” ci ha lasciato in lacrime come neonati, “Adam raised a Cain” è stata di una profondità terrorizzante, e insieme a questo, la più gioiosa musica da festa che si possa immaginare. Ho osservato intensamente Bruce lavorarsi la folla di casa, modesto e orgoglioso allo stesso tempo, e parlare a favore dell’assistenza sanitaria per tutti la sera che la riforma proposta da Obama è stata respinta al Senato, mentre stormi a freccia di oche canadesi e aerei diretti a Newark volavano sopra il Giants Stadium in serate sia gelide che profumate di mare, fra le paludi del New Jersey afflitto dalla recessione. Ho passato un po’ di tempo con cari amici, fatto un picnic sotto la pioggia a Bryant Park, chiacchierato con incredibili giocatori di scacchi professionisti e senzatetto di Washington Square Park, percorso in lungo e in largo la metropolitana, saccheggiato lo Strand, visto i provini di The Americans di Robert Frank, e ammirato la gentilezza complessiva di New York a confronto con come stiamo vivendo qui nelle città. Non ho ancora guardato le foto, le posterò nei prossimi giorni. Voglio continuare ad assaporare ogni minuto del mio viaggio sulla Luna prima di tuffarmi nell’ultima stesura del mio libro. Ancora col jet-lag, stamattina ho cominciato il mio nuovo programma – si chiama “Alaska” e spero che vi offrirà dei bei vagabondaggi nelle letture dei blog.

It’s good to be home, or, as Bruce put it in New Jersey, “it’s nice to be playing in my backyard” :) The B is so happy that he climbs everywhere, including me, and while I was away he has completed putting on his winter fur. I have seen a tremendous artist focusing on stadium performances at 60 as if they were club venues played at 25. “Racing in the streets” left us all crying like babies, ”Adam raised a Cain” was scarily scarily deep, and along with that, the happiest energetic party music. I have intensely observed Bruce working his home crowd, humbled and proud at the same time, speaking pro-health care for all on the day that the Obama proposed reform was rejected by Senate, while wild geese arrow flocks and Newark-bound planes flew over Giants Stadium on nights both chilly and sea-smelling, amongst the meadows of recession-stricken New Jersey. I have spent time with beautiful friends, picnic-ed in Bryant Park under the rain, had the most amazing conversations with professional chess players and homeless people in Washington Square Park, travelled the subway up and down, runsacked the Strand bookstore, seen Robert Frank’s contact sheets for The Americans, all in all admired New York kindness if compared to how we currently live in our cities here. I haven’t had a look at the photos yet, I’m going to post them in the next few days. I still want to savour every minute of my journey to the Moon before plunging into the last draft of my book. Still jet-lagged, started my new radio program today – it is called “Alaska” and will hopefully bring you some nice detours in blog-reading.

Porte che si chiudono e porte che si aprono. Sonno da autunno. Preparo la nuova trasmissione. La riscrittura finale del libro si prospetta come la parte più godibile, per cui me la tengo da parte per un po’, lasciando che anche NY dia il suo tocco fatato. Quello che mi sembrava irrisolvibile qualche settimana fa assume una luce diversa. Nuove interviste che mi danno gioia: Elizabeth Strout, David Peace, Rebecca Solnit, Ann Beattie. Parlare di libri :) Ci sediamo con gli amici a pensare come affrontare l’inverno con uno spirito nuovo.

Closing doors, opening doors. Autumn sleep. I’m getting ready for the new program. Final rewriting of the book looks the most enjoyable, so I’m taking my time for it and NYC will put her magic touch on it too. What looked unsolvable a few weeks ago takes on a new light. New interviews that fill me with joy: Elizabeth Strout, David Peace, Rebecca Solnit, Ann Beattie. Talking about books :) We sit down with friends to talk about how to face the winter with a new spirit.
