E tre settimane dopo, passate innumerevoli notti insonni a cavarsi gli occhi nelle ricerche, a ripercorrere l’anno più avventuroso della nostra vita, rivivendo una tonnellata di emozioni, ecco il progetto collettivo con @strelnik, @ezekiel e @mehditek nato dalla sua idea, #yearinhashtag. E’ il nostro 2011 attraverso i momenti più importanti che abbiamo vissuto su Twitter – dalla Tunisia all’Egitto, dal Bahrain a Oslo, dalla Libia a Bin Laden a OccupyWallStreet, alle nostre amministrative di primavera. Per ogni argomento/hashtag trovate una scheda riassuntiva e i tweet, i link, le foto, i video più significativi di questi momenti che non volevamo perdere. E’ un regalo per voi, e un tributo alle migliaia di tweep e cyberattivisti che spesso in condizioni proibitive ci hanno permesso di raccontare la loro storia.

Three weeks later, after countless sleepless night slaving over research, retracing our steps in the most adventurous year of our lives, re-experiencing tons of emotions, here’s the collective project that was born out of her idea, #yearinhashtag (a version in English is coming soon). It is our 2011 through the most important moments we’ve been living on Twitter – from Tunisia to Egypt, from Bahrain to Oslo, from Lybia to Bin Laden to OccupyWallStreet. For every subject/hashtag you can find an essay and the most meaningful tweets, links, photos and videos illustrating the moments in time we just didn’t want to be lost. It is a gift for you, and a tribute to the thousands of tweeps anc cyberactivists who – often in prohibitive conditions – allowed us to tell their story throughout the year.

Dopo quello che è successo a Roma il 15 ottobre, ho scritto una lettera che sta girando un po’ in rete, la trovate su questo nuovo tumblr che ho aperto, Tweetdeep.

Travolta dalla Libia tutto il giorno, tutti i giorni. Mi fa venire voglia di ripensare a quando ero bambina e i piedi ancora non mi toccavano per terra quando facevo dondolare le gambe sulla sedia. Mi fa venire voglia di raggomitolarmi a letto a leggere il bellissimo “Quella sera dorata” di Cameron finché non mi si chiudono gli occhi.  Ma non si può, non adesso.

Swept away by Libya all day, everyday. Makes me want to think back to when I was a child and my feet didn’t yet touch the ground when dangling from a chair. Makes me want to cuddle up in bed reading Cameron’s beautiful The city of your final destination until my eyes close. But it can’t be done, not now.

Sono assorta da giorni a coprire e seguire la rivolta al Cairo su Twitter. Oggi ho visto come il blogger Wael Ghonim ha risposto a un giornalista straniero nella folla di piazza Tahrir quando gli ha chiesto in inglese fino a che punto i manifestanti sono disposti ad arrivare. Wael era stremato dopo 12 giorni passati prigioniero e bendato, ma i suoi occhi neri sono cambiati di colpo. Ha guardato il reporter e ha detto: “ricordatevi che faremo quello che dobbiamo fare”. Mi domando cosa sia scomparso dai nostri, di occhi neri.

I’ve been engulfed in covering and following the revolt in Cairo via Twitter for days. Today I saw the way blogger Wael Ghonim in the crowd in Tahrir square has answered to a foreign journalist asking a question in English about how far they are willing to go. He was wrecked after 12 days spent blindfolded in prison, but his black eyes suddenly changed. He looked at the reporter and said “remember, we will do what we have to do”. I wonder what has disappeared from OUR black eyes.

Pensavo che avrei preso questa mattinata politica con molta meno rabbia.

I thought I was going to take this political morning with a lot less rage.

In qualunque momento, ci sono persone dappertutto che stanno leggendo un libro. Leggono libri sulla metropolitana, leggono libri a letto mentre fuori piove, leggono libri in un momento rubato – e mi commuove profondamente che alcune di loro adesso stiano leggendo un libro che ho scritto io. E poi a loro volta mi scrivono. Mi scrivono molto poco di B. Mi scrivono del loro padre, della natura, del tentativo di capire, della politica e della passione. Ogni volta che ricevo uno di questi messaggi, mi sento come se fossi vestita di diamanti dalla testa ai piedi e luccicassi nel buio. Può sembrare difficile da credere, ma è una cosa che sembra completamente scollegata dal periodo in cui stavo scrivendo. Ho spedito il mio messaggio nella bottiglia in quello che sembra tanto tempo fa. E adesso quando passeggio sulla mia spiaggia mi giungono decine di bottiglie che tornano con la corrente, e ogni volta è una sorpresa.

At any given moment, there’s people everywhere reading books. They are reading them on subway trains, they are reading them in bed while it rains outside, they are reading them out of a stolen moment – and it moves me deeply that some of them are now reading my own book. And then they write things back to me. They write to me very little about B. They write about their own father, about nature, about trying to understand,  about politics and passion.  Whenever I receive one of these messages, I feel as if I was dressed in diamonds from head to toe, glowing in the dark.  It may be hard to believe, but it truly feels like something totally disconnected from the time of my own writing. I sent my message in the bottle what seems like a long time ago. And now dozens of bottles are coming back to me with the tide whenever I take a walk on the beach. And every single time it feels like a surprise.

Il mondo va a rotoli e questa è la mia unica arma: una matita.

The world is collapsing and this is my one weapon: a pencil.

Mi sono convinta a studiare da capo alcune cose. E tutt’a un tratto gli stimoli arrivano da ogni parte: discussioni su Che Guevara, Pierpaolo Pasolini, A. che mi regala un librone sul progetto fotografico di Gregory Crewdson Dream House, K. che parla dei libri di Joseph Campbell sul mito dell’eroe.

I’ve set my mind to study a few things all over again. And all of a sudden, hints flow in abundantly: discussions about Che Guevara, Pierpaolo Pasolini, A. giving me a big book with Gregory Crewdson’s photo project Dream House, K. talking about Joseph Campbell’s books about the myth of the hero.

L’unica cosa che può risollevarmi dall’esito delle elezioni è che ieri ho visto le prove per la copertina del mio libro. Per un attimo è stata la cosa più bella del mondo.

The one thing that can lift my spirit after the outcome of our elections is that yesterday I saw the proofs for the cover of my book. For one split second it was the most beautiful thing in the world.
