Una delle cose più meravigliose dell’iPad  è la app di Instagram, con i suoi filtri per foto quadrate che finalmente mi ricordano le adorate Polaroid, Lomo e Holga, le macchine giocattolo. Felice come una bambina.

One of the most beautiful things about iPad is the Instagram app, with its different filters for square pictures, finally reminding me of my beloved Polaroid, Lomo e Holga, the toy machines.  Happy as a baby.

Nonostante la pioggia, i guai, il mal di testa, La Città – così lontana – è venuta da me, ed è stato bello. E’ sempre bello quando gli affetti si riuniscono, le città si fondono, e tutto diventa finalmente intero.

PS oggi su tanti blog una grande notizia: The Impossible Project è riuscito a produrre due nuove pellicole in bianco e nero per le nostre vecchie macchine Polaroid, saranno in vendita da giovedì. Potete vedere una prima galleria qui.

Despite the rain, the troubles, the headache, The City – apparently so far away – has come to me, and it felt so good. It is always good when dear ones reunite, when cities melt into one, and everything finally becomes whole.

PS today on many blogs there’s great news: The Impossible Project has finally managed to put into production two new varieties of B&W film for our old Polaroid cameras. You can see how they look here.

Una cosa ho scoperto di sicuro, che quando scriviamo ci trasformiamo in qualcosa che è fatto soltanto delle nostre cellule cerebrali, dimenticando tutto il resto. Una volta che ne sono uscita, sono rimasta scioccata nello scoprire di avere ancora un corpo. Non riuscivo a ricordarmi quello che avevo mangiato per settimane, o interi percorsi per andare al lavoro. Somiglia molto a quando si è innamorati, è un’ossessione, e se ne esce dall’altra parte svuotati e inetti, sebbene in qualche modo vincitori, estranei a se stessi. Così il tempo di zuppa di cui vi parlavo è diventato volutamente tempo di sonnellini, di dormite, di coccole, di letture, di film, di risate, di camminate, di odori, di maglioni caldi, di bagni, di cucinare e nuotare, tutto quel nutrimento che non ci viene dal pensiero – il mondo reale che arriva a noi attraverso il corpo e i sensi, e non mi sorprende che pian piano mi sto riprendendo. Mi chiedo se un giorno riuscirò a bilanciare meglio questi due aspetti.

Più esploro la blogosfera, più trovo compagni di Polaroid, è bellissimo. E l’Impossible Project sta lì a dimostrare che il puro commercio non necessariamente può dettare quello che amiamo. Sono molto vicini a mettere in produzione la nuova pellicola che tanto aspettiamo :)

One thing I’ve found for sure, in writing you turn into just your brain cells, forgetting everything else. Once I came out of my own writing, I was shocked at finding I actually still had a body. I couldn’t remember what I had eaten for weeks, or whole days of my commuting. It’s very much like being in love, it’s an obsession, and you come out of it at the other end emptied and inept, though a winner in your own way – a stranger to yourself. So soup time is now purposedly turning into nap time, sleep time, cuddle up time, reading time, movie-watching time, laughing time, walking time, smelling time, dressing up time, bathing time, cooking time, swimming time, all that nourishing that doesn’t come from thinking – the real world that comes to us through our bodies and senses, and no surprise I’m slowly recovering. I wonder whether one day I’ll be able to juggle this better.

The more I explore the blogosphere, the more I find fellow Polaroid fans. It feels so good. And The Impossible Project is there to show that pure commerce doesn’t necessarily dictates what we love. They are finally close to producing the new film we’ve been long waiting for :)

Progetti esotici per questo particolare fine settimana, cari: scaldarmi in pigiama, cucinare torte e zuppe, prendere il tè con le amiche, finire di leggere un libro, ideare una modifica per la casa, digitare come una matta sulla tastiera per il mio libro ascoltando il tetro-e-bellissimo Nebraska per mettermi dell’umore giusto, fare un censimento di stampe e Polaroid, giocare al Circo Volante con la B,  e dormire dormire dormire.

Exotic plans for this particular weekend, my dears: warming up in my pijamas, baking cakes and soups, finishing up a book, designing a new idea for the house, keying in like crazy listening to the bleary- and-beautiful Nebraska to set myself in the mood, sorting out photo prints and Polaroids, playing flying circus with the B, having tea with girlfriends, and sleep sleep sleep.

Mi sono resa conto di non avervi mai detto com’era andata a finire con l’inaspettata cartuccia di Polaroid 600 che mi aveva trovato il nostro tecnico.  Be’, era più che scaduta (diciamo che più che altro era scaduta da dieci anni…) e si era tutta fusa in un unico blocco, molto appiccicoso, molto puzzolente, non se n’è potuto fare niente, salvo questo improbabile “tramonto” che si è formato nell’emulsione. Oggi mi sento parecchio come quel blocchetto, comunque so che passerà domani. In ogni caso, oggi sto diventando un po’ matta per le mie foto. Ho bisogno di un modo per vedere le foto in modo da poter usare le mani (sì, le mani, hai sentito bene, cara era digitale…) per far partire dei progetti. Sapete, tipo spargendo le foto su un tavolo. Spero di trovare un modo di stampare che non mi mandi anzitempo all’ospizio. Spero che l’Impossible Project sarà davvero pronto per l’anno nuovo con una nuova pellicola per la Polaroid. Spero di trovare qualunque sia quello che sto cercando quando faccio le foto. I realized I never told you what I had done about the unexpected Pola 600 pack that our tech found for me. Well, it was all more than expired (more like expired ten years ago…) and all stuck in one block, very sticky, very smelly, nothing good came out of it, except this unlikely “sunset” in the emulsion.  I feel very much like that block today, but I know it’s going to be okay tomorrow.  Anyway, I’m sort of going crazy over my photos today. I need a way to see photos so that I can use my hands (yes, my hands, dear digital age…) to establish projects. You know, like spreading prints on a table. I hope I can find a way to print that doesn’t end me up at the hospice. I hope the Impossible Project is really going to be ready by next year with a new film for Pola.  I hope I find whatever it is I am looking for when I take pictures. Mentre cercavamo, pulivamo e fotografavamo i cimeli della radio per la grande asta online, il nostro tecnico di bassa frequenza, E., ha trovato una cosa per me nei suoi cassetti polverosi, dove tiene viti di tutte le misure, fusibili e ogni genere di segreti: una cartuccia di pellicola Polaroid 600. So che dovrei essere soddisfatta della mia macchina digitale, ma la prospettiva di fare qualche scatto con la mia vecchia SX-70 mi ha reso felice come una bambina. Un raggio di luce in una giornata avvolta dalla tristezza. perché oggi mi manca tantissimo.

While collecting and dusting and photographing beautiful memorabilia for the  radio station’s great auction online, our low frequency technician, E., has found something for me in his dusty drawers, where he keeps screws of all sizes, fuses  and all kind of secrets: a cartridge of Polaroid 600 film. I know I should be content with my digital camera, but the prospect of taking a few pictures with my old SX-70 made me as happy as a baby. A ray of light in a day that has been enveloped in sadness, ’cause today I miss him so much.

Fagiolo è uno dei molti soprannomi per la B. Oggi si parlava di cucina, comincio a pensare sempre più spesso che quello che spio da altre discipline – cucina inclusa – lo posso poi trasferire sulla scrittura. Già la fotografia sta dicendo “più vicino, parziale, soggettivo, sfrontato”. Il blog sta per compiere 6 mesi, e sto preparando la Lista n.3, siete avvisati! Ah, e per tutti voi amanti della Polaroid, hanno creato un aggiornamento costante di notizie sull’Impossible Project.

Bean is one of the many names for the B. We were talking kitchen today, I’m starting to think more and more that everything I can spy from other disciplines – cooking included – I can then transfer to writing. Photography is already saying “closer, partial, subjective, bold”. The blog is almost 6 months old, and I’m preparing The List n.3, beware! Oh, and all of you Polaroid lovers, they started a news feed on The Impossible Project.

Quando racconto agli amici tutto quello che abbiamo visto alla Cineteca di Bologna, sembra che siamo stati via un mese. Siccome è impossibile riassumere tutto in poche righe, andrò per titoli: una minicittà nella città; gli edifici ristrutturati di una ex manifattura tabacchi e di un ex macello ridisegnato da Aldo Rossi; in mezzo i Giardini Pubblici con una giostra felliniana; una testa di bue in pietra che ricorda le non gloriose origini dell’edificio; 80 persone che lavorano nei vari settori con una dedizione impressionante; la porta dell’ufficio di Anna, che non ha la porta, è una silhoutte di cartone di Charlot; la biblioteca cinematografica piena di studiosi; l’archivio Pasolini che raccoglie anche il suo archivio su nastro di appunti sonori sui set; il Leone d’Oro alla Carriera di Marcello Mastroianni; centinaia di migliaia di fotografie di scena e di lavoro in bianco e nero del cinema italiano e internazionale raccolte in speciali scatole d’archivio con grossi fiocchi deliziosi, e scaffali scorrevoli come in un sottomarino; migliaia di riviste cinematografiche, liste dialoghi, sceneggiature, lettere, documenti, quaderni di lavoro con storyboard, Polaroid, appunti e disegni; le due sale cinematografiche specializzate, una rossa e una blu, e il proiezionista che ci saremmo portati a casa con noi; i progetti di restauro della World Cinema Foundation di Martin Scorsese, il laboratorio di restauro, nel quale api operaie riparano millimetro per millimetro pellicole danneggiate, separano rumori di fondo delle apparecchiature dell’epoca dai rumori causati dall’usura, studiano per anni, fanno il censimento delle copie esistenti di un film, incollano, ricuciono, producono nuove copie positive o nuovi negativi dai positivi e concepiscono un restauro aperto perché anche le generazioni future possano intervenire con nuove tecnologie. E infine, il mirabile Archivio Charlie Chaplin, col salvataggio dei suoi film e la digitalizzazione a uso pubblico di tutte le centinaia di migliaia di carte del suo archivio personale. Ci hanno aperto davanti un quaderno di lavoro di Monsieur Verdoux, con gli schizzi dei cappellini firmati “CC” e i suoi disegni per la direzione dello sguardo della fiorista, e mi è girata la testa. Una specie di Arca di Noè al servizio del cinema, un luogo di fitto lavoro, minuziose competenze e sguardi proiettati in avanti. Una bellezza da lasciare senza parole,  un privilegio esserci stati, e poterlo fotografare.

When I tell friends everything we’ve seen at Bologna Film Collection, it sounds as we’ve been away for one month. Since it’s impossible to sum up everything in a few lines, I’ll go by titles: a minitown inside the city; the refurbished buildings of an ex cigarette factory and an ex abattoir redesigned by Aldo Rossi; the public gardens in the middle, with a fairground remeniscent of Fellini; a stone bull’s head that reminds us of the not-so-glorious origins of the building: 80 people working in different sectors with astonishing dedication; the door to Anna’s doorless office is a cardboard silhouette of Charlot; the cinema library full of scholars; the Pasolini archive where his tape archive of voice notes on sets is collected; Venice Golden Lion to the career to Marcello Mastroianni; hundreds of thousands of black and white set photographs, all collected in special archival & beautifully ribboned boxes, dialogue lists, scripts, letters, papers, working scrapbooks with handmade storyboards, Polaroids, notes and drawings; the two film venues, the red and the blue, and the projectionist we would have gladly taken back home with us; the film restoration projects for Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Foundation, the restoration lab, where busybees repair damaged film strips millimetre by millimetre, separate original background noises from the noises caused by wear and tear, study for years, take a census of all existing copies, glue, sew up, produce new positive copies or new negatives from existing positives and conceive a restoration that will stay open to the future intervention of those who will enjoy different technologies. And last but not least, the awesome Charlie Chaplin archive, where his films are saved and restored to their original form and hundreds of thousands of papers from his personal archives are digitalized for public use and consultation. They opened up before us a scrapbook for Monsieur Verdoux, with his sketches up the pillow box hats signed “CC” and his drawings for the direction of the flowers girl stare, and I felt like swooning. A sort of Noah’s Ark for cinema, a place of thick work, minute skills and stares ahead. Its beauty left me speechless, pure privilege to watch it, and being allowed to shoot it.

Cerco sempre di ricatturare quella sensazione della Polaroid – qualcosa nei colori, ma soprattutto nel modo in cui posso restare sorpresa quando riguardo lo scatto. E questa foto è stata una sorpresona, oltre a ritrarre 2 delle cose che mi tolgono il fiato per la loro bellezza, quella curva della testa della B., e le gerbere arancioni in cucina. Penso sempre più spesso di fotografare meglio quello che amo. Non è una questione di familiarità, perché c’è anche un grosso elemento di sorpresa (come se li guardassi per la prima volta). No, è proprio buon vecchio amore. N. dice che dovrei aprirmi un pool su Flickr, allora vi chiedo: quanto tempo pensate possa portar via? Il fatto è che trovo il blog già impegnativo. Andrea ha postato una cosa molto speciale sui coltelli, e grazie krom999 per il paragone con la lampadina (che dolce!), penso che stiamo tutti cercando di adattarci alla crisi economica (che è anche una crisi benvenuta dei modelli che abbiamo perseguito troppo a lungo) trovando nuove cose interessanti, e ho la sensazione che quest’anno abbiamo già una messe di opportunità. Il regista inglese Julien Temple era a Milano e si è unito alla manifestazione in sostegno al Conchetta – parlando della trasformazione delle nostre città  ha detto: “abbiamo l’occasione di decidere se vogliamo essere degli esseri umani o no”. Questo post è dedicato a Gange, un grande cane buono che farà sempre parte della famiglia.

I’m always trying to recapture that Polaroid feeling – something to do with colors, but mostly, the similarity I seek for is in how much I can be surprised when I look back at the shot I’ve taken. And this was one hell of a surprise, besides catching 2 of the things that take my breath away with their beauty - that curve on the B’s head, and orange gerberas in my kitchen. I think more and more that I take my best photographs at what I love deeply. It’s not familiarity, either, because surprise is a big element (as in watchung them anew). No, it’s plain good old love. N. says I should start a Flickr pool, and so I ask you guys:  how much time does it take daily or weekly? Things is, I find blogging already quite absorbing. Andrea has posted something really special about knives, thank you krom999 for the lightbulb comparison (sweeeet), I think we’re all trying to adjust to the current economical crisis (which is also a welcome crisis in the models we have pursued for too long) finding new interesting things for ourselves, and I feel this year there is already plenty of opportunities. British director Julien Temple was in Milan and he joined the demonstration to support community center Cox18 – talking of the transformation that our cities are undergoing, he said “we have a chance to decide whether we want to be human beings or not”. This post is dedicated to Gange, a big sweet dog that will always be part of the family.

E’ fatta, sono passata, sono dall’altra parte. La realtà ha preso il posto della follia, sono orgogliosa di non essermi sottratta qualunque fosse il risultato, una gran lezione su come accogliere l’imprevisto, una gran lezione sul fatto che non dobbiamo temere di essere i vecchi noi stessi perché magari non lo siamo più, siamo qualcuno di nuovo che non conoscevamo, con una chance di essere più liberi di prima. Ora mi rifugerò a sognare via la paura. Oggi voglio celebrare le donne, la loro incredibile capacità di fornire sostegno, di adattarsi, di evolversi, e non ultimo, di ridere dei guai. E in tributo alle fantastiche amiche che ho nella mia vita – la Mole Sister, F., la Sposa, A., e perfino me stessa – spero che riusciate a vedere il bellissimo documentario di Steven Sebring su Patti Smith, Dream of life. Per quanto questo possa stupirmi, Patti Smith è ancora un modello per me, ancor più di quanto lo fosse quando avevo 18 anni. Quando ero ragazza, lei era perduta per sempre alle mie spalle, la leggenda che aveva lasciato le scene; ora sono vent’anni che è tornata, una carriera addirittura doppia rispetto a quella per cui era celebre e data per persa. Vedendo questo film, non lascia più meravigliati che non abbia mai potuto, nemmeno per un giorno, smettere di scrivere, cantare, studiare, dipingere, battersi contro la guerra, fare foto con la sua Polaroid Land, mentre cresceva due figli e seppelliva il marito, il fratello, la madre, l’adorato Mapplethorpe, il suo mentore Allen Ginsberg. Patti Smith è Anna Magnani, è una greca antica, è New York, è una femmina in un mondo di maschi con il quale è stata così brava da contrarre eterna amicizia. Ha sessant’anni, e in qualunque momento si può cogliere nella sua solenne compostezza una scintilla di fanciullezza. Se vedrete il film, guardate attentamente quando canta una canzone di Fabrizio De André al suo gatto nella cornice di una finestra velata. Il timbro della sua voce è scolpito dentro di me, e mi ricordo quando ho visto il mio primo Pollock da vicino al Moma (One: Number 31, 1950) e mi sono seduta su una panca pensando a lei. E’ così innamorata della vita che mi spaventa a morte. Ho avuto la fortuna di intervistarla due volte, e di vederla suonare in molte occasioni. L’ho vista ballare a piedi nudi su petali di rose, l’ho vista con gli stivali, con il velo, con le trecce, un tutt’uno con la sua Gibson, l’ho vista suonare il clarinetto, sussurrare, predicare, urlare. Comincia sempre pianissimo, fragile, e invariabilmente procede fino a diventare invincibile. Non l’ho mai sentita mettere insieme le parole a casaccio, non l’ho mai vista artificiosa; è una madre, un angelo punk, un dizionario vivente e una terrorizzante guardiana di fantasmi. Ha fatto di se stessa un’opera d’arte sempre in trasformazione, e le donne si meritano più poetesse che siano tutte loro.

It’s done, I’m through it, I’m on the other side. Reality has taken the place of madness, I’m proud I showed up whatever the outcome, big lesson in incorporating the unforeseen, big lesson in knowing you don’t need to be scared of being your old self  because maybe you are no longer, you’re somebody new you’ve never met before, with a chance to be much freer. I will curl up in a ball now and dream my fears away. I want to celebrate women today, their incredible ability to give support, to adapt, to evolve, and last but not least, to laugh about trouble. And paying homage to the beautiful women friends I have in my life - the Mole Sister, F., the Bride, A., even myself – I hope you will have a chance to see the great documentary film about Patti Smith by Steven Sebring, Dream of life. I am astonished at how Patti Smith is still a role model to me, even more than she was when I was 18. When I was a young girl she was lost behind me, forever the legend who had left the public scene; she’s now been back twenty years, making it double the career than the one she was notorious for and assumed as lost. Watch this film and wonder no more how she could never, not even for one day, stop writing, singing, studying, painting, fighting against war, taking photographs with her Polaroid Land, while raising two children and burying husband, brother, mother, the beloved Mapplethorpe, her mentor Allen Ginsberg. She’s Anna Magnani, she’s an ancient Greek, she’s New York, she’s a female in a male-ruled world she was bright enough to make eternal friends with. She’s 60 and you can still catch sight of that girlish sparkle anytime in her otherwise solemn composure. If you see the film, watch carefully when she sings Fabrizio De André to her cat in the frame of a laced window. The tone of her voice is sculpted within me, and I remember seeing my first Pollock from up close at the Moma (One: Number 31, 1950) and sitting down on a bench thinking of her. She’s so in love with life she scares the shit out of me. I was so lucky to interview her twice, and to see her perform many times. I’ve seen her dancing barefoot on rose petals, wearing boots, wearing veils, with tresses in her hair, one thing with her Gibson guitar, playing clarinet, whispering, preaching, yelling. She always starts soft and fragile and invariably progresses to utterly invincible. I’ve never heard her put words together sloppily, never seen her contrived; she’s a mother, a punk angel, a living dictionary and a terrifying guardian of ghosts. She has made of herself an everchanging work of art, and women deserve more poets of their own.
