Il mercato comunale di quartiere – micropianeta di platanos e Inka-Cola – è molto più vicino alla realtà di quanto un sacco di persone vorrebbero. E a me piace molto.

The neighbourhood town market – microplanet of platanos and Inka-Cola – is much closer to reality than most people would wish. And I love it.

Si sta già accorciando.

It’s already getting shorter.

Non ci sono dubbi, nove anni dopo la mia prima Polaroid, mi arrendo al fatto che il mio formato è il quadrato, e la mia idea di fotografia umorale, non letterale. Credevo di avere un problema con la fotografia digitale, ma adesso Instagram mi aiuta a rielaborare foto rettangolari scattate con la Canon (che nei miei sogni avrebbero sempre dovuto essere quadrate) e mi permette di vederle come le avevo sempre avute in mente. E questo è un futuro delle mie foto che non avrei immaginato.

No discussion, nine years on since my first Polaroid, I surrender to the fact that the  square format is my format. And moody, non literal too. I thought I was a problem with digital photography, but now Instagram helps me reelaborate rectangular pics taken with Canon, which in my dreams should have been square in the first place, and lets me see them as originally intended. And this is a future for my pics that I would have never imagined.

She’s bracing herself for hurricane Irene. And I miss her so much.

Sono sotto shock, Milano è liberata, la gioia è proporzionale all’aria cupa che molti di noi hanno respirato per tutta la loro vita adulta. Ma la cosa più sconvolgente è che quel filo arancione che ci passavamo di mano in mano ieri sera viene da molto lontano, da un luogo misterioso di fiducia in cui il sogno sembrava impossibile, e ho la sensazione di averlo seguito per cinque mesi ogni giorno, dalla Tunisia in poi, soltanto sperando che portasse fin qui. Ma il fatto è che poi il futuro è arrivato alla velocità della luce.

I’m shocked, Milano has been freed, and the size of our joy is equal to the foul air we breathed for most of our adult lives. But the one thing that is really shaking me is that the orange thread we passed from one hand to another last night came from very far away, from a place of mystery and trust where dreams seemed unattainable, and I feel like I have been following it every day for five months since Tunisia, only hoping to get as far as here. But fact is, then future has come at the speed of light.

Un giorno dell’estate scorsa L mi ha portato due di questi al lavoro. Mi ha detto “mia nonna li ha fatti per te, perché ti ascolta sempre alla radio”.

One day last summer L brought me two of these at work, he said “my grandma made them for you, because she always listens to you on the radio”.

Se solo riuscissi a scrivere queste zaffate di gelsomino, il lino fresco, il melone appiccicoso sulla punta delle dita.

If only I was able to write down these whiffs of jasmine, the fresh linen, the sticky melon on my fingertips.

Più cresce qualcosa di lussureggiante, e più si creano sentieri segreti, giochi d’ombra e mistero. Maggio è decisamente il mio mese – sempre stato da quando ero bambina e probabilmente lo sarà fin quando sarò vecchia e rugosa.

The more something luscious is growing, the more secret paths and shadow plays and mysteries are created. May is definitely my month of the year – always has been since I was a child and probably always will be ’til I’m old and wrinkled.
