La bella e la bestia

L’incomparabile E. mi ha spedito per posta un regalo di compleanno, una busta gialla che è atterrata a casa mia da New York. Forse vi ricordate l’adorata libreria di Williamsburg “Spoonbill & Sugartown” e come ha festeggiato il suo decimo compleanno. E. mi ha mandato il bellissimo librino che hanno realizzato con le foto dei loro clienti (e dei rispettivi libri, compresa me e il libro di Moira Davey). Grazie di cuore, E! The peerless E. has sent me a late birthday gift through the post, a yellow package landing on my doorstep from NYC. You may remember the beloved Williamsburg bookstore Spoonbill & Sugartown and the way they celebrated their 10th birthday. In the package E sent me the beautiful book they made with the photos of their customers (and their books, including me & the Moira Davey book). Thank you E!!!!! Mi sono convinta a studiare da capo alcune cose. E tutt’a un tratto gli stimoli arrivano da ogni parte: discussioni su Che Guevara, Pierpaolo Pasolini, A. che mi regala un librone sul progetto fotografico di Gregory Crewdson Dream House, K. che parla dei libri di Joseph Campbell sul mito dell’eroe.

I’ve set my mind to study a few things all over again. And all of a sudden, hints flow in abundantly: discussions about Che Guevara, Pierpaolo Pasolini, A. giving me a big book with Gregory Crewdson’s photo project Dream House, K. talking about Joseph Campbell’s books about the myth of the hero.

Meglio tardi che mai, una scelta fra quello che ho letto di recente!/Better late than never, a selection of what I’ve been reading lately!

Cormac McCarthy, “Suttree”/Suttree – una lingua ricca, lussureggiante, profonda, vocaboli musicali e di infinita varietà, una perfetta atmosfera scura e fetida di fiume, il mio McCarthy preferito fin adesso (ma è del 1979)/Rich, luscious, profound, musical words, boundless vocabulary, perfect dark and fetid river atmosphere, my favourite McCarthy up to now (from 1979, though)

Dave Eggers, “Zeitoun”/Zeitoun - questo saggio narrativo mi ha fatto impazzire, la storia vera di un benintenzionato lavoratore musulmano che resta bloccato nella sua città durante l’uragano Katrina e finisce in prigione; Eggers è molto meglio come scrittore di non fiction che di fiction. Da leggere assolutamente./I went crazy for this book of creative non fiction about a well-meaning Muslim man caught up in Hurricane Katrina ending up in jail; Eggers is a lot better at nonfiction than at fiction. A must-read.

Rebecca Solnit, (non tradotto)/River of shadows: Eadweard Muybridge and the technological Wild West - un altro saggio favoloso dall’impareggiabile Rebecca, stavolta sull’eroe della fotografia in movimento e su come cambiò la concezione del tempo con la nascita della ferrovia/another brilliant essay from the incomparable Rebecca, this time about the hero of motion-photography and the changing concept of time at the birth of the railway.

James Ellroy, “Il sangue è randagio”/Blood’s a rover – Sono ancora stregata da come scrive. Detto questo, non riesco a capacitarmi del perché abbia dovuto stirare il tutto per 800 pagine. “American Tabloid” probabilmente irripetibile./ I’m still bewitched by his writing; that said, I can’t possibly begin to figure out why he stretched this to 800 pages. American Tabloid probably irrepeatable.

David Plouffe, (non ancora tradotto)/The audacity to win – cercando di uscire dall’angolo di cinismo in cui ci hanno rinchiuso in Italia, mi interessano sempre di più i meandri della politica sul campo; questo è il racconto della campagna improbabile di Obama nelle parole del direttore di quella campagna; molti dietro le quinte e la dimostrazione che si possono rifiutare le narrazioni dominanti su “come vanno fatte le cose”/I’m more and more interested into the meandering of politics, looking for a way out of cynicism. This is the account of against-all-odds Obama’s campaign as told by the campaign’s director, plenty of behind the scenes and proof that yes, you can, refuse the narrative of “how it should be done”.

Elizabeth Gilbert, “Mangia, prega, ama”/Eat, pray, love – Ammetto che me lo sono procurato solo perché ne parlavano tutti i blog, soprattutto quelli delle giovani donne non molto soddisfatte della loro vita e delle priorità occidentali. E invece sono rimasta ipnotizzata; per essere un bestseller contento di esserlo, molto molto buono. Suonerebbe tutto un po’ self-help e karma se Liz non fosse così incredibilmente lucida e piena di senso dell’umorismo. Ovviamente adesso diventa un blockbuster con Julia Roberts/I got it only because all blogs were talking about it, especially the ones by young women-not-so-happy-with-their-lives-and-western-lifestyle. Actually I was hooked; very very good to be a self-fulfilling bestseller. Everything would sound a bit “self-help meets karma” if only she wasn’t so incredibly lucid and full of humour. Soon to be turned into a major motion picture featuring Julia Roberts.

Robert Harris, “Il ghostwriter”/The ghostwriter - su questo è basato L’uomo nell’ombra di Roman Polanski; un thriller molto teso sul ghostwriter di un quasi-Tony Blair, mi dicono che il film è ancora più misterioso e quasi Hitchcock/the screenplay of the new Roman Polanski film; very tight thriller read, about a quasi-Tony Blair memoir ghostwriter, I’m told the film is even more mysterious and very Hitchcock.

Elizabeth Benedict, (non tradotto)/Mentors, muses & monsters - una raccolta di saggi brevi di vari scrittori sui loro mentori. Un pezzo fantastico sulla vera Susan Sontag, il mio preferito Julia Glass sulla sua editor, una lezione di Gordon Lish, la crudele Elizabeth Hardwick, lezioni seguite da Denis Johnson, e naturalmente l’autosufficiente Joyce Carol Oates non ha mai avuto mentori/a collection of short memoir pieces from major and lesser writers about their own mentors. Fantastic piece about the real Susan Sontag, and my favourite was the story of Julia Glass about her editor; a lesson from Gordon Lish, the cruel Elizabeth Hardwick, courses taken by Denis Johnson, and self-sufficient Joyce Carol Oates of course had no mentors at all.

Robert McFarlane, (non tradotto)/The wild places - un libro di saggistica narrativa sulla ricerca di immersioni selvagge e misteriose nella natura in Inghilterra e in Irlanda. Lento, ricco e magico, mi è paciuto molto/ a creative non-fiction book about the search for wild and mysterious immersions in nature in England and Ireland. Slow, rich and magic, I loved it.

Sto lottando per uscire dal mio cinismo politico. Non è una cosa che si fa in un giorno. David Foster Wallace diceva che riusciamo sempre a distinguere fra i piazzisti e i leader, e che di leader ne esistono pochissimi.

I’m struggling to find my way out of political cynicism. Not a one day task, though. David Foster Wallace used to say that you can smell a salesman from a leader, and there are very few leaders.

Non proprio una Spada, ma l’ho comunque piantata nella Roccia. Una giornata abbastanza buona, nonostante la gola ancora in fiamme.

Not exactly a Sword, but I stuck it into the Stone anyway. Quite a good day, despite the throat still burning.

Dal numero di orecchie sulle pagine di questo libro potete capire quanto l’ho amato! E’ troppo tempo che non vi faccio la lista dei libri, dovendo scrivere ho letto meno del solito, ma eccola qua/ By the number of dogears on the pages of this book, you can tell how much I loved it!  It’s been too long since I last posted my booklist, being writing I have read less than usual, but here it is.

1. Barry Lopez, “Sogni artici”, Arctic Dreams – un libro meraviglioso che ho finalmente riletto in originale, un’esplorazione minuta dei ghiacci dell’Artico, della sua gente, dei suoi animali, l’atteggiamento coloniale dei grandi esploratori, gli scienziati di oggi, le mappe fisiche e quelle dell’immaginazione; un capolavoro assoluto della creative non fiction e un libro pieno di speranza per una visione sostenibile della terra e del futuro/a wonderful book that I finally re-read in English, a minute  exploration of the ice of the Arctic, of its people and animals, of the colonial attitude of explorers, of modern day scientists, of physical maps and maps of the imagination; an absolute masterpiece of creative non fiction and a book full of hope for a sustainable vision of the land and the future.

2. Marylinne Robinson, Home – il seguito di Gilead o meglio, la stessa storia che riguardava il reverendo Ames raccontata però in casa del vecchio pastore Boughton, soprattutto nei dialoghi in cucina tra la figlia Gloria e il figliol prodigo Jack. Mi ha inchiodato, indimenticabile/the follow up to Gilead, or better, the same story that there was told from the reverend Ames household point of view, now told in the house of old pastor Boughton, especially by way of kitchen dialogues between his daughter Gloria and his prodigal son Jack. It nailed me, unforgettable.

3. Angela Pneuman, “Rimedi casalinghi”, Home remedies - raccolta di racconti incentrati soprattutto sull’inafferrabile mondo interiore di ragazzine adolescenti, molto azzeccati, difficile non identificarsi/a collection of short stories, centered mainly on the fleeting intimate world of teenage girls, very focused, hard not to relate.

4. Valentina Agostinis, ” Londra chiama – otto scrittori raccontano la loro metropoli”/no translation available, bellissimo ritratto corale delle inquietudini contemporanee di Londra attraverso interviste originali con JG Ballard, Monica Ali, Nick Hornby, Gautam Malkami, Iain Sinclair, Will Self, Hari Kunzru e Hanif Kureishi – multietnicità, urbanistica, psicogeografia /a wonderful portrait of the contemporary disquiet of London by way of original interviews with JG Ballard, Monica Ali, Nick Hornby, Gautam Malkami, Iain Sinclair, Will Self, Hari Kunzru and Hainf Kureishi – multiethnicity, urban planning, psychogeography.

5. Gad Lerner, “Scintille”, no translation available - l’autobiografia familiare del giornalista che si mette sulle tracce dei fantasmi dei suoi famigliari ebrei in Europa, Libano e Israele; doloroso, coraggioso e magnetico, la dimostrazione che un nuovo cittadino del mondo può esistere/the ethnical autobiography of a journalist and tv personality who chases the ghosts of his Jewish ancestors all through Europe, Israel, Lebanon. Painful,  bold and magnetic, it proves that such a thing as a citizen of the world can now exists.

6. Daniyal Mueenuddin, “Altre stanze, altre meraviglie”/In other rooms, other wonders – racconti assolutamente magistrali ambientati nel Pakistan moderno/absolute masterly short stories set in modern Pakistan

7. Matt Mason, “Punk capitalismo”/The pirate’s dilemma - tutto quello che avreste sempre voluto sapere su pirateria, contrabbando, mixaggi, campionamenti, furti, taglia e incolla, scaricamenti e come battere il copyright- e poi, la strada contro le grandi aziende/all you ever wanted to know about piracy, bootlegging, mixing, sampling, stealing, cutting & pasting, downloading, defying copyright, plus the street vs the big companies

E’ passato tanto tempo – festeggiando l’inverno che ci lascia più tempo per accoccolarci a leggere, ecco la lista dei libri che ho letto in queste settimane e mi sento di consigliarvi/It’s been a long time – celebrating winter that allows more time to cuddle up and read a book, here’s the book list of the stuff I’ve been reading in the last few weeks that you may find interesting.

1. TC Boyle, “Le donne”, The women - un’impresa molto ambiziosa: TC Boyle racconta la strana storia del grande architetto di fama internazionale Frank Lloyd Wright con gli occhi delle tre donne più importanti della sua vita, ciascuna frutto del tradimento o della morte della precedente; gli incontri, le tragedie e le relazioni sono raccontate al contrario, dalla più recente alla più antica, e tenute insieme dalla narrazione di uno stupendo personaggio, studente giapponese a Teresin/ a very ambitious achievement: TC Boyle recounts the quirky story of the internationally acclaimed architect Frank Lloyd Wright through the eyes of the three most important women in his life, each the result of the death or betrayal of the previous woman; the encounters, tragedies and relationships are told backwards, from the most recent to the oldest, and the glue is a wonderful Japanese student character living at Teresin.

2. Rebecca Solnit, “Un paradiso all’inferno”, A paradise built in hell - la nuova ricerca narrativa della grande saggista, stavolta si inoltra nelle profondità di quello che accade alle comunità dopo un incendio, un’alluvione, un terremoto, un attentato; a dispetto di quello che si pensa comunemente, siamo attrezzati per aiutarci gli uni con gli altri, e scopriamo una gioia rara e profonda nella nostra comunità ritrovata e autorganizzata. Un’altra riflessione cruciale sui sentimenti della sfera pubblica/the new narrative research by the great essayist, this time she delves into the depths of what happens to communities after a flood, a fire, an earthquake, a bomb attack: despite what everybody says, we are well equipped to help each other and experience a rare and profound joy in our new-found, self-organized community. Another key reflection about the emotions of public life.

3. Richard Ford, “Incendi”, Wildlife - LUCLPLDM mi ha dato questo nell’ambito del programma di completamento del mio amore per Richard Ford: INCREDIBILE racconto lungo o romanzo breve che dir si voglia, del ‘91/ TMWRMBITW gave me this as part of the completion program of my Richard Ford loving; AWESOME ‘91 short novel.

4. Ann Beattie, “Gelide scene d’inverno”, Chilly scenes of winter – romanzo del 1976, sorpassato e un po’ esagerato nel minimalismo della scrittura, ma Charles è un personaggio prodigioso/1976 novel, very outdated and slightly too minimalist in the writing, but Charles is a prodigious character.

5. Rebecca West, “Il ritorno del soldato”, The return of the soldier – piccola novella d’esordio della grande scrittrice inglese (1918), un minicapolavoro che mi ha ricordato le simmetrie del Signore di Ballantrae di RLS/small debut novel by the great British writer (1918), a minimasterpiece that reminded me of the simmetries of RLS’s The master of Ballantrae

6. Richard Ford, “Donne e uomini”, Women with men – un po’ meno amato nel mio programma di completamento, una trilogia di racconti su donne con uomini (una citazione hemingwayana da “uomini senza donne”?), grande scrittura ma le storie mi hanno lasciato fredda/a little less loved in my completion program, a trilogy of stories about women with men  (Hem quote about “men without women”?), great writing but it left me cold.

7. Alain De Botton, A week at the airport - non sono una fan di Alain de Botton, ma aspettavo questo libro fin da quando lui è  stato nominato primo “resident writer” della storia dell’aeroporto londinese di Heathrow ad agosto; con un accesso illimitato a tutte le parti di uno degli scali più grandi e trafficanti del mondo, de Botton ha scritto per una settimana nella sala centrale del terminal 5, e il suo strano racconto, soprattutto delle persone che ha incontrato, è intriso di una riflessione poetica e surreale sulla cultura globale/I am not a fan, but I’ve been waiting for this book since Alain de Botton was first appointed  ”resident writer” in history in London’s Heathrow airport last August; with unrestricted access to every part of one of the largest and most traveled stopovers in the world, he wrote for one week in the central hall of Terminal 5, and his quirky telling, especially about the people he met, is soaked in a poetic and surreal pondering about global culture.

8. Alexandra Johnson, The hidden writer - Woolf, Mansfield, Nin, Sarton, Alice James, Anais Nin, Sonya Tolstoj;  un saggio, bellissimo, sul rapporto fra la letteratura segreta del diario (specialmente femminile) e quella pubblicata/ Woolf, Mansfield, Nin, Sarton, Alice James, Anais Nin, Sonya Tolstoj: a wonderful essay about the relationship between the secret literature of the journal and the published one.

9. AM Homes, “In un paese di madri”, In a country of mothers – prequel del ‘93 in forma di romanzo al recente, autobiografico La figlia dell’altra, se quello vi è piaciuto, dovete leggere anche questo, anche se la penna era meno sicura e il finale è un po’ buttato via/1993 novel prequel to to the faboulous, recent autobiographical The mistress’ daughter,  if you loved that, you need to read this too, though the pen is less steady and the final is sloppy.

10. Nathalie Goldberg, Old friend from far away – un altro libro di scrittura creativa dalla maestra di Scrivere zen, stavolta su come scrivere attingendo all’autobiografia, un po’ debole, con buoni esercizi/another creative writing book from the master of Writing down the bones, this time dealing with writing memoir, or how to draw from autobiography, a bit weak, with good exercise prompts.
