Una delle cose più meravigliose dell’iPad  è la app di Instagram, con i suoi filtri per foto quadrate che finalmente mi ricordano le adorate Polaroid, Lomo e Holga, le macchine giocattolo. Felice come una bambina.

One of the most beautiful things about iPad is the Instagram app, with its different filters for square pictures, finally reminding me of my beloved Polaroid, Lomo e Holga, the toy machines.  Happy as a baby.

Voglio diventare come la B, che riconosce un giorno di festa prima ancora che io apra gli occhi, che annusa la pioggia ore prima che piova, che mi sente quando sono ancora lontana.

I want to become like the B, who knows it’s a festive day before I even open my eyes, who smells rain many hours beforehand, who senses me when I’m still far away.

Ho appena finito di leggere il bellissimo libro di memorie di Jim Harrison, Off to the side. Ho pensato, che bello essere vecchi e sentirsi finalmente liberi di scrivere tutta la selvaggia verità. Poi mi sono resa conto che il momento di scrivere la selvaggia verità è sempre. E’ adesso.

I just finished reading the wonderful memoir by Jim Harrison, Off to the side. I thought how wonderful to be old and finally feel free to write the wild truth. Then I realized that the time to write the wild truth is always. It’s now.

Era ora – qualcuno dei libri che ho letto negli ultimi tempi/It was time, here’s some of the books I’ve been reading lately.

Jonathan Franzen, “Libertà”/Freedom – non a tutti è piaciuto, e Franzen ha avuto vita dura con la costruzione del nuovo romanzo, ma è una storia contemporanea potente (cioè quello che gli altri non sanno più fare perché il mondo è diventato troppo liquido), e con una grandissima protagonista. Amore, ipocrisia di sinistra, il dilemma dell’ambiente/ not everybody liked it, and Franzen had a hard time building his new novel, but it is a powerful contemporary story (that means, what everybody else cannot do because the world has become too liquid), with a giant heroine. Love, the hypochrisy of the left, the environmental dilemma.

Antonia Fraser, Must you go? - la grande storica inglese dà addio all’amore della sua vita, il drammaturgo Harold Pinter, con una selezione dei diari che lo menzionano, attraversando decenni di affetto e seduzione e di conversazione sull’arte e la politica/ the great British historian bids farewell to the love of her life, playwright Harold Pinter, travelling through decades of affection, seduction and artistic and political conversation.

Susan Sontag, “Sulla fotografia”/On photography – il grande classico sulla fotografia, ancora affascinantissimo oggi/the great classic essay about photography, still compelling to this day.

Nick Rosen, Off the grid – disturbante (per me) racconto di prima mano su chi in America vive scollegato dalla rete energetica e abitativa; comincia come “vi mostro come si può vivere con poco” ma finisce con una manciata di ricchi anti-federali e un mucchio di gente disperata e incolta che vive completamente fuori dal sistema/nerveracking (to me) first-hand account of people living off the grid in America; it starts as “I’ll show you how to downsize” but ends up with a few rich guys who are anti-federate and a bunch of desperate and ignorant people who live completely out of the system.

Alice Munro, Too much happiness – la nuova raccolta dalla maestra vivente del racconto breve, complessa, stratificata, leggermente meno bella del solito/the new collection from the living master of the short story, layered, complex, slightly less good than usual.

Andrea Pomini, “Tutto qui – la storia dei Massimo Volume” - un coro di testimonianze intrecciate, probabilmente il libro più serio e importante sull’indie rock italiano mai scritto fin qui/a choir of intertwining witnesses accounts, probably the best and most serious book ever written about Italian indie rock so far.

Ian McEwan, “Solar”/Solar – vale quello che dicevo sopra per Franzen, uno scrittore che ha l’ambizione di scrivere su come viviamo ADESSO – ed entrambi sembrano preoccupati per le stesse cose; insolito McEwan comico, con Beard personaggione/same as above about Franzen, one writer who has the aim to write about the way we live NOW – and they both seem preoccupied with the same themes; very unusual comic McEwan, with Beard a giant character.

Peter Cameron, “Quella sera dorata”/The city of your final destination - mi ero persa questo bellissimo piccolo romanzo quando era uscito, è la storia del giovane Omar Razaghi che cerca di ottenere il permesso di scrivere la biografia di uno scrittore, e negli spazi selvaggi dell’Uruguay trova qualcos’altro/missed this great little novel when it was published, the story of the young Omar Razaghi trying to obtain permission to write the biography of a writer, and finding something else completely in the wilderness of Uruguay.

Michael Cunningham, “Una casa alla fine del mondo”/A home at the end of the world - un libro vecchio, il primo romanzo dell’autore di Le ore, una storia emozionante e una mano felicissima nelle descrizioni/an old book, the first novel from the author of The hours, a moving story and a superb hand at descriptions.

Orhan Pamuk, “Il museo dell’innocenza” – alla fine Pamuk mi sfinisce sempre, ma l’idea del museo del proprio amore è stupefacente, e l’amore più grande del libro è Istanbul/Pamuk always overextends me in the end, but the idea of the museum of your love is astonishing, and the biggest love here is for Istanbul.

Sélim Nassib, “Ti ho amata per la tua voce”/I loved you for your voice - parte della mia educazione sentimentale sul Cairo, è la storia della più grande cantante araba di tutti i tempi, Oumm Khalsoum, che copre 40 anni attraverso tutti i sollevamenti dell’Egitto/part of my ongoing Cairo sentimental education, the story of the greatest Arab woman singer of all times, Oumm Khalsoum, spanning four decades through all Egyptian turmoil.

Partitella a calcio del sabato mattina, la B scatenata in inseguimenti e agguati, completamente impazzita per una noce che rotolava velocissima facendo schioccanti rumori sul legno. Mi ha ricordato che dalle più piccole cose può esplodere e propagarsi un’enorme energia.

Saturday morning soccer time. The B quick on the chase and lying in ambush,  going absolutely crazy over a fast-rolling, loud-cracking nut on the wooden floor. Reminding me that enormous energy can explode and propagate from the smallest things.

E’ stato l’anno più magico della mia vita fin qui. Mi auguro per tutti noi un nuovo anno di grandi passioni e meravigliosi progetti, e di lotta per raggiungere tempi più luminosi. Abbiate cura di voi, auguri anche dalla B, ci risentiamo il 10 gennaio ;)

Ad ogni inverno, la B sembra avere una comprensione speciale per la cruda e breve luce di dicembre. Non smetto mai di stupirmi per la sua capacità di sintonizzarsi con le stagioni.

Every winter, the B has a special understanding of the crude and short December light. Neverending astonishment at his ability to attune with the season.

La serata di diluvio per The Promise è stata come riunirsi intorno al focolare, grazie a tutti quelli che c’erano, tenerissimi. Per fortuna la B si è ripresa bene, oggi i primi tentativi di reinserire nel suo mondo pollo e tonno, che sono un po’ le sue divinità.  Una delle cose che speravo a Parigi era di trovare qualche buona foto. Appena ho scattato, questa ha trovato me.

The deluge The Promise night was like gathering around a campfire, thanks to all of you who were there, so sweet. Luckily the B has recovered completely, today the first attempt to reintroduce chicken and tuna in his world. They are deities to him. One of the things I was hoping for in Paris was to find good photos again. As soon as I shot, this one found me.

Ciao tutti, non sono svanita nel nulla, sono appena tornata da una grande avventura a Parigi, vi dico tutto domani, adesso sono in piena sindrome da mamma preoccupata, perché da qualche giorno la B non sta bene. Di solito il veterinario dà la camomilla a me…
