Ha piovuto così a lungo che nessuno ha pensato di potare le siepi o di domare i rami ribelli. E io preferisco di gran lunga così. Il sole è tornato e la città è una giungla – una rivoltosa processione di foglie verdi.

It rained for so long that nobody thought of shaping hedges or taming overflowing branches. And I like it so much more. The sun is back and the city is a jungle – one riotous parade of green leaves.

La posizione preferita dalla B in questi giorni di pioggia (trovo che esprima bene il concetto di “stare in campana”).

Ieri gita alla Venaria Reale (To), potete vedere i panorami a 360° qui: giardini a perdita d’occhio fino alle pendici del Gran Paradiso, la Sala Grande da togliere il fiato, la Citroniera con l’allestimento di vecchi ulivi e il teatrino, le Scuderie del Juvarra… Un solo giorno fuori da Milano sembra una vacanza di una settimana.

The B’s favourite position in these rainy days (I find it apt to express the concept of “watching your back”).

Sono una creatura di maggio. Il monsone batte sul tetto e nei sogni tutte le mie città diventano una sola.

C’era il sole, ma non era quello dell’avvenire.

Ieri abbiamo fatto una festa per te, e quando mi sono avviata verso casa sapevo che sarebbe arrivata una di quelle sorprese. Ho seguito l’istinto e mi sono fermata a prendere un kebab. Un galante uomo arabo mi ha servito un ottimo kebab per 2 euro e 50. Il muro della cucina era fatto di piastrelle bianche e arancioni, e il locale era denso di musica araba. Ho guardato in su e mi sono accorta che la musica veniva da uno stranissimo, tenero registratore a cassette tutto sporco degli anni Settanta. Oh, tu saresti impazzito dalla gioia.

We had a party for you last night, and when I made my way home I knew I was in for one of those surprises. I followed my istinct and made a stop to buy myself a kebab. A gallant Arab man served me the best kebab for 2.50 euro. The kitchen back wall was tiled in white and orange, and Arab music filled the place.  I looked up and I saw that it was coming from the strangest, cutest dirty little 70’s tape recorder. Oh, you would have flipped over with joy.

Nonostante la pioggia, i guai, il mal di testa, La Città – così lontana – è venuta da me, ed è stato bello. E’ sempre bello quando gli affetti si riuniscono, le città si fondono, e tutto diventa finalmente intero.

Despite the rain, the troubles, the headache, The City – apparently so far away – has come to me, and it felt so good. It is always good when dear ones reunite, when cities melt into one, and everything finally becomes whole.

Even a storm means it’s Spring, anyway.

Dal numero di orecchie sulle pagine di questo libro potete capire quanto l’ho amato! E’ troppo tempo che non vi faccio la lista dei libri, dovendo scrivere ho letto meno del solito, ma eccola qua/ By the number of dogears on the pages of this book, you can tell how much I loved it!  It’s been too long since I last posted my booklist, being writing I have read less than usual, but here it is.

1. Barry Lopez, “Sogni artici”, Arctic Dreams – un libro meraviglioso che ho finalmente riletto in originale, un’esplorazione minuta dei ghiacci dell’Artico, della sua gente, dei suoi animali, l’atteggiamento coloniale dei grandi esploratori, gli scienziati di oggi, le mappe fisiche e quelle dell’immaginazione; un capolavoro assoluto della creative non fiction e un libro pieno di speranza per una visione sostenibile della terra e del futuro/a wonderful book that I finally re-read in English, a minute  exploration of the ice of the Arctic, of its people and animals, of the colonial attitude of explorers, of modern day scientists, of physical maps and maps of the imagination; an absolute masterpiece of creative non fiction and a book full of hope for a sustainable vision of the land and the future.

2. Marylinne Robinson, Home – il seguito di Gilead o meglio, la stessa storia che riguardava il reverendo Ames raccontata però in casa del vecchio pastore Boughton, soprattutto nei dialoghi in cucina tra la figlia Gloria e il figliol prodigo Jack. Mi ha inchiodato, indimenticabile/the follow up to Gilead, or better, the same story that there was told from the reverend Ames household point of view, now told in the house of old pastor Boughton, especially by way of kitchen dialogues between his daughter Gloria and his prodigal son Jack. It nailed me, unforgettable.

3. Angela Pneuman, “Rimedi casalinghi”, Home remedies - raccolta di racconti incentrati soprattutto sull’inafferrabile mondo interiore di ragazzine adolescenti, molto azzeccati, difficile non identificarsi/a collection of short stories, centered mainly on the fleeting intimate world of teenage girls, very focused, hard not to relate.

4. Valentina Agostinis, ” Londra chiama – otto scrittori raccontano la loro metropoli”/no translation available, bellissimo ritratto corale delle inquietudini contemporanee di Londra attraverso interviste originali con JG Ballard, Monica Ali, Nick Hornby, Gautam Malkami, Iain Sinclair, Will Self, Hari Kunzru e Hanif Kureishi – multietnicità, urbanistica, psicogeografia /a wonderful portrait of the contemporary disquiet of London by way of original interviews with JG Ballard, Monica Ali, Nick Hornby, Gautam Malkami, Iain Sinclair, Will Self, Hari Kunzru and Hainf Kureishi – multiethnicity, urban planning, psychogeography.

5. Gad Lerner, “Scintille”, no translation available - l’autobiografia familiare del giornalista che si mette sulle tracce dei fantasmi dei suoi famigliari ebrei in Europa, Libano e Israele; doloroso, coraggioso e magnetico, la dimostrazione che un nuovo cittadino del mondo può esistere/the ethnical autobiography of a journalist and tv personality who chases the ghosts of his Jewish ancestors all through Europe, Israel, Lebanon. Painful,  bold and magnetic, it proves that such a thing as a citizen of the world can now exists.

6. Daniyal Mueenuddin, “Altre stanze, altre meraviglie”/In other rooms, other wonders – racconti assolutamente magistrali ambientati nel Pakistan moderno/absolute masterly short stories set in modern Pakistan

7. Matt Mason, “Punk capitalismo”/The pirate’s dilemma - tutto quello che avreste sempre voluto sapere su pirateria, contrabbando, mixaggi, campionamenti, furti, taglia e incolla, scaricamenti e come battere il copyright- e poi, la strada contro le grandi aziende/all you ever wanted to know about piracy, bootlegging, mixing, sampling, stealing, cutting & pasting, downloading, defying copyright, plus the street vs the big companies

(un posto che quest’anno mi ha reso davvero felice/a place that really made me happy this year)

Stamattina mi sono svegliata col peso del decennio sulle spalle. A ben guardare, è incredibile quante cose sappia adesso che dieci anni fa non sapevo. Cinque persone fondamentali della mia vita nel frattempo sono morte, e sono nati dieci bambini. La cosa più importante in assoluto che ho imparato è a confidare nelle sorprese e a non risparmiarmi, perché c’è sempre dell’altro. Il 2009 in particolare è stato l’anno più denso di esperienze per me di tutti questi ultimi dieci anni. Come potrebbe essere altrimenti, con 2 viaggi a New York, aver scritto il mio libro, tanto amore e tempesta e lotta con le mie paure, incredibili nuovi amici, nuove profondità, una nuova trasmissione, una nuova macchina fotografica, diventare una blogger, un grande anno di tour di B., niente denaro ma la scoperta di incredibili ricchezze in tutti i miei cassetti segreti. Più di ogni altra cosa, questo è stato l’anno della sua morte. Ha incendiato la pianura, non è rimasto più niente, e io mi sono messa in testa di coltivarla. Manterrò la mia promessa. Auguro a tutti un anno dolce, forte, che valga la pena. E ne vale sempre la pena.

I woke up today with the weight of the decade on my shoulders. At a closer look, how many things I know now that I didn’t know ten years ago, it’s astonishing. Five crucial people in my life have since died, and ten babies were born. The most important thing I have learnt is to trust in surprises and not to spare myself, there is always more and more. 2009 in particular has been the single most experiences-packed year of this decade for me, what with 2 trips to New York, writing my book, a lot of love and turmoil, fighting of fears, incredible new friends, new depths, a new program, a new camera, becoming a blogger, a great year with B touring, no money at all but incredible riches found in all of my secret drawers. Most of all, this was the year of his death. It set fire to the prairie, nothing was left, and I have set myself to farm it. I am going to keep my promise. I wish you all a sweet, strong, worthwile new year. And it is always worthwhile.
