Home now finally a masterpiece of calm and twinkling lights, and the B knows. The city around me softly breathing in her winter sleep.

Sono colma di meraviglia e soggezione per tutto quello che ha portato quest’anno. Non c’è stato un solo giorno in cui non abbia vissuto pienamente.

I am full of awe and wonder for everything that this year has been bringing. There was not one day when I wasn’t living to the fullest.

Una partenza d’estate diabolicamente lenta, dopo aver corso a 100 all’ora per mesi. Sfortunatamente, secondo la mia esperienza, è anche il momento migliore per mettersi a scrivere.

A diabolically slow summer onset, after burning my candle at both ends for months. Unfortunately, according to my experience it is also the best time to sit down and write.

Ho lavorato per anni a creare la mia casa, e adesso scopro che il mio lavoro è finito. Non perché la mia casa sia perfetta, ma perché sono diventata io stessa la mia casa.

I’ve been working for years and years on creating my home, and now I find I’m finished. Not because my home is perfect, but because I have become my own home.

Partitella a calcio del sabato mattina, la B scatenata in inseguimenti e agguati, completamente impazzita per una noce che rotolava velocissima facendo schioccanti rumori sul legno. Mi ha ricordato che dalle più piccole cose può esplodere e propagarsi un’enorme energia.

Saturday morning soccer time. The B quick on the chase and lying in ambush,  going absolutely crazy over a fast-rolling, loud-cracking nut on the wooden floor. Reminding me that enormous energy can explode and propagate from the smallest things.

Ho fatto colazione al suono furioso delle seghe elettriche che abbattevano i due ulivi giganti sulla terrazza dell’attico di fronte a casa mia. Gli ulivi sono i miei alberi preferiti, e per tredici anni, quasi cinquemila giorni,  mi sono svegliata ogni mattina controllando il cielo intorno ai loro rami. Forse erano malati o a rischio di caduta, e l’attico è in vendita da molto tempo, ma quegli uomini che tagliavano i rami e i tronchi avevano il suono sinistro di una polizia degli alberi. Allo stesso tempo quando è caduto l’ultimo tronco, nella mia stanza è arrivata una luce enorme. E in questo momento la mia vita è così piena di sorprese stupende  che ho pensato che sia necessario abbattere le cose vecchie per fare spazio a quelle nuove.

I had breakfast at the furious sound of electric saws cutting down the two giant olive trees on the attic terrace in front of my window. Olive trees are my favourites, and for thirteen years, almost five thousand days, I have woken up every day checking the sky around their branches. They were probably sick or in danger of falling, and the attic has been on sale for some time, but those men cutting the branches and the trunks had the sinister sound of some tree police. At the same time, when the last trunk fell, there was suddenly an enormous light in my room. And so many beautiful surprises are filling my life right now that I thought it’s necessary to cut down the old to make space for the new.
