La presentazione di ieri è stata abbastanza comica, quando è stato il mio turno mi sono accorta di avere in bocca il chewing-gum che non sapevo dove mettere, così l’ho appiccicato sotto i fogli da cui dovevo leggere; mezz’ora dopo avevo un lungo filo gommoso appiccicato alle dita. A parte questo, e l’emozione, mi è servito molto a capire cosa fare (e non fare) le prossime volte, ma soprattutto il libro mi ha protetto, il mio angelo della scala antincendio mi ha protetto, i miei amici mi hanno protetto, e fra i miei amici c’erano amici che non sapevo di avere, grazie di cuore.

My first reading yesterday was quite comic, when it was my turn to speak I realized I was chewing a gum that I didn’t know where to put, so I stuck it under the sheets I would read from. Half an hour later a long thread of chewing gum was stuck to my fingers. This and the overflowing emotion notwithstanding, I’m going to use it to pin down what to do (and  not do) next time, but even more important, the book protected me, my angel of the fire escape protected me, my friends protected me, and among my friends there were friends I didn’t even know I had, thank you so much.

La B ha passato bene la sua visita annuale, stavolta con un po’ più di caos del solito – ha soffiato selvaggiamente alla povera assistente del veterinario, spaventandola a morte. Immagino che ne sia uscito col suo (enorme) orgoglio intatto. Dopo, a casa, gli è venuta sete. Come al solito, con due ciotole e un bicchiere pieni d’acqua a disposizione, ha scelto di bere dal vaso dei fiori.

The B passed his annual medical with a little bit more turmoil than expected – he savagely hissed at the young inexperienced vet help, scaring her out of her wits. I guess he walked out with his (huge) pride intact. Afterwards, at home, he was thirsty. As usual, with two bowls of water and a glassful ready for him, he chose to drink from the flower vase instead.

L’incomparabile E. mi ha spedito per posta un regalo di compleanno, una busta gialla che è atterrata a casa mia da New York. Forse vi ricordate l’adorata libreria di Williamsburg “Spoonbill & Sugartown” e come ha festeggiato il suo decimo compleanno. E. mi ha mandato il bellissimo librino che hanno realizzato con le foto dei loro clienti (e dei rispettivi libri, compresa me e il libro di Moira Davey). Grazie di cuore, E! The peerless E. has sent me a late birthday gift through the post, a yellow package landing on my doorstep from NYC. You may remember the beloved Williamsburg bookstore Spoonbill & Sugartown and the way they celebrated their 10th birthday. Sono un po’ indietro con tutto, e grossi smottamenti si muovono nella mia anima, così grandi che riesco a malapena ad afferrarli. Sto lavorando, bloggando , twittando, scrivendo, leggendo, traducendo, amando, cercando di tenermi al passo con gli amici (e fallendo), ma il grosso sta accadendo a un livello onirico, grandi e tonde ondate di emozione e di scoperta che mi mandano gambe all’aria e mi stanno cambiando. Spero. Perché voglio cambiare, ed è ora.

I’m kind of behind with everything, and huge landslips are happening in my soul, so large I can barely grasp them. I’m working, blogging, tweeting, writing, reading, translating, loving, trying to keep up with friends (and failing), but most of it is happening at a dreamy level, big round waves of emotion and discovery that flip me upside down and leave me changed. I hope. Because I want to change, and it’s time.

Ieri è stata una giornata grossa. Lavorare al libro al mattino, parlare con Patti Smith nel pomeriggio del suo legame sacro con Robert Mapplethorpe, e i miei di legami sacri la sera. Non ho avuto cuore di tirar fuori la macchina fotografica, così ho fatto uno scatto di quello che lei mi ha lasciato.

Yesterday was a big day. Working on the book in the morning, talking to Patti Smith in the afternoon about her sacred bond with Robert Mapplethorpe, my own sacred bonds in the night. I couldn’t find heart to use my camera, so I took one shot of what she has left me.

Ha detto che dopo che ce ne siamo andati, quando ha fatto buio, tutto il giardino si è riempito di lucciole.

He said that long after we had left, as it got dark, the whole garden was filled by fireflies.

La pioggia d’estate, un soffio di brezza salata. Una lunga telefonata, convenire che il vero succo è tutto dentro di noi, e che va protetto.

The summer rain, a whiff of salty breeze. A long phone call and we agreed that the true juice is all within, and it must be protected.

Ci sono giorni in cui l’unico obbiettivo è sopravvivere fino a sera, e oggi è uno di quelli. PERO’. Benvenuto al mondo, Ari.

There’s days when your only aim is to survive unscathed until night, this is one of those. BUT. Welcome into the world, Ari.

Happy birthday, my most wisely B :)

Ieri abbiamo fatto una festa per te, e quando mi sono avviata verso casa sapevo che sarebbe arrivata una di quelle sorprese. Ho seguito l’istinto e mi sono fermata a prendere un kebab. Un galante uomo arabo mi ha servito un ottimo kebab per 2 euro e 50. Il muro della cucina era fatto di piastrelle bianche e arancioni, e il locale era denso di musica araba. Ho guardato in su e mi sono accorta che la musica veniva da uno stranissimo, tenero registratore a cassette tutto sporco degli anni Settanta. Oh, tu saresti impazzito dalla gioia.

We had a party for you last night, and when I made my way home I knew I was in for one of those surprises. I followed my istinct and made a stop to buy myself a kebab. A gallant Arab man served me the best kebab for 2.50 euro. The kitchen back wall was tiled in white and orange, and Arab music filled the place.  I looked up and I saw that it was coming from the strangest, cutest dirty little 70’s tape recorder. Oh, you would have flipped over with joy.
