Come tanti, anch’io nella vita ho avuto la mia bella dose di momenti ad aspettare una telefonata, e mi è venuta poco in soccorso la nota regola per cui più si guarda il telefono tamburellando nervosamente con le dita, e meno è probabile che il telefono suonerà. Ma a differenza delle attese che ben conosciamo, quando si aspetta che qualcuno che ci piace ci richiami – che per quanto insopportabile sul momento, prima o poi superiamo e dimentichiamo – questa ha qualcosa di strano che non credo potrò dimenticare. E’ come aver partorito un bambino e aspettare che qualcuno ti dica che sì, lo vede anche lui, effettivamente c’è, non è frutto della tua immaginazione, non è un sogno, ed è vivo, e scalcia e piange e ride, e, se sei fortunata, è pure carino. Mi chiedo ancora come sia possibile lavorare per uno o due anni a qualcosa, possedendolo da cima a fondo, e trovarsi ancora a pensare che gli altri vedranno soltanto dell’inchiostro simpatico, o che scopriranno che cosa hai scritto in realtà in tutto quel tempo, come Jack Nicholson in Shining: “Il mattino ha l’oro in bocca – il mattino ha l’oro in bocca – il mattino ha l’oro in bocca”….
Like most, in my life I have had my share of waiting for phone calls, poorly equipped with the wisdom that the more you watch the phone while nervously tapping your fingers, the less it will be likely to ring. But unlike that well-known waiting for someone you fancy to call you back, which for all its being unbearable in the moment we soon go over and forget, this waiting has something peculiar about it I think I’ll never forget. It’s like having given birth to a baby and waiting for someone to tell you that yes, they see it too, it’s there, not a figment of your imagination, not a dream, and it’s alive, it kicks and cries and laughs, and, if you’re lucky, that it’s quite cute too. I still wonder how we can possibly work on something for one or two years, possessing it through and through, and still think that to others it will turn into magic ink or that they will see that you’ve actually written the whole time, like Jack Nicholson in Shining: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy – All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy – All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”…
