La bella e la bestia

Se avete voglia di andare a Napoli per un evento straordinario, Simo Capecchi ha preparato qualcosa di speciale per la nuova edizione di Galassia Gutenberg, che comincia domani alla Stazione Marittima. In mancanza dell’agognata edizione italiana della Biennale dei Carnet de Voyage che si svolge a Clermont-Ferrand, è l’occasione migliore per godere dei lavori dei migliori autori internazionali di taccuini di viaggio a tecnica mista. Verrà proiettato il documentario 1000 journals, si potrà incontrare Stefano Faravelli, si potranno vedere le pagine di cinque libri collettivi (fra questi l’ultima creatura di Danny Gregory), una staffetta di moleskiners, 30 carnet su Napoli, il lavoro degli Urban Sketchers e molte altre cose succulente. If you want to go to Naples for an extraordinary event, Simo Capecchi brings something special to the new edition of Galassia Gutenberg, which is starting tomorrow. Missing the long-awaited Italian edition of the Biennale des Carnet de Voyages that takes place in Clermont-Ferrand, this is your best chance to enjoy the work of the best international authors of carnet de voyage made out of different techniques. There will be a screening of the documentary 1000 journals, Stefano Faravelli will meet the audience, you will be able to see the pages of five collective books (among them the last creature of Danny Gregory), a moleskiners’ relay race, 30 carnets about Naples, the work of the Urban Sketchers and a lot more juicy things. Oggi ho letto che gli scienziati sono convinti che produciamo col cuore onde di energia per diversi metri intorno a noi, e in numero 5000 volte superiore a quelle che produciamo col cervello. Quello che è strano è che per la maggior parte del tempo i moti del nostro cuore li subiamo, invece di imprimere loro una direzione. L’arte forse ci aiuta a dare a questo caos così potente una forma che possiamo condividere. Quello che continuo a imparare da M. è netto e cristallino, energia pura, la disciplina che permette di imbrigliare l’ispirazione, il gusto folle per il gioco, l’uso di tutto il corpo per produrre ciò che cuore e mente progettano – è molto bello.

I read today that scientists believe our hearts produce energy in waves around them for some metres, in a quantity 5000 times bigger than the energy produced by our brains. What is funny is that most of the time we sort of put up with what our hearts feel instead of directing it. Art probably help us shape up this powerful chaos into a form we can share. What I keep on learning from M. is sharp and crisp, pure energy, the discipline to rein in inspiration, the crazy taste for play, the use of all your body to produce what heart and mind design- it feels so good.

Al matrimonio mi sono infilata nella stupenda mostra di video di Tacita Dean, il caldo torrido rendeva ancora più credibili i rumori dei vecchi proiettori nelle sale dai soffitti affrescati altrimenti vuote, nel buio assoluto. Tacita Dean è la maestra della lentezza – ci sono segreti intrappolati nelle crepe del nostro tempo se solo rallentiamo abbastanza da vederle. Questo è il vecchio coreografo Merce Cunningham che danza (da fermo) sulla (silenziosa) “4′33”” di John Cage. Avrei bisogno di fare come lui.

While at the wedding, I sneaked into the beautiful exhibition of videos by Tacita Dean, the heat made the noise of projectors all the more believable in the otherwise empty rooms with frescoed ceilings, in absolute dark.  She’s the master of slow – secrets are trapped in the cracks of our time if we only slow down enough to observe. This is old coreographer Merce Cunnigham dancing (still) to John Cage’s (silent) ”4′33””. I’d need to do the same.

Questo è per la Mole Sister, che sta tessendo la sua nuova tela, in bocca al lupo sorella, metà del risultato sta nel dare inizio al processo. Mentre la Sposa e lo Sposo si involano verso l’Andalusia, dopo una giornata di grandi festeggiamenti che ha riunito amici di tutte le parti del mondo, ripenso al sorriso radioso della Sposa il giorno della cerimonia, e alla sua gioia incondizionata, qualcosa che francamente, ai matrimoni, non si vede spesso quanto si vorrebbe. Oggi è un giorno strano per me, vado verso la conclusione di una serie infinita di pensieri che  dovevo togliermi, e allo stesso tempo l’inizio di una fase interamente nuova che ancora non so come sarà. Nel frattempo è arrivato qualcosa di dolce nella posta, e la mia unica ambizione per questa settimana è riuscire a dormire 8 ore a notte ;) 

While the Bride and Groom are flying to Andalucia, after a day of great celebrations that brought together friends from all over the world, I’m still thinking of the bright smile of the Bride on the day of the wedding, and her unconditional joy, something that really at weddings we don’t see as often as we would like to. Today is a strange day for me, I’m going towards the closure of an endless series of worries I had to get rid of, and at the same time I’m starting an entirely new phase not knowing what it will be like. In the meantime there was something sweet in the mail, and my one ambition for this week is to sleep 8 hours per night ;)

Alcune cose degne di nota nella nostra fettina di blogosfera: Stephanie racconta di come darsi delle limitazioni di colore la aiuti a concentrarsi su qualcosa di specifico nei suoi progetti, altrimenti si trova bloccata per troppa scelta – questo mi fa suonare un campanello, come ho visto anche con gli studenti della Nuova Accademia di belle Arti di Milano, avere dei limiti nei progetti creativi fa bene, ogni volta che mi perdo di qua e di là scrivendo il mio libro (l’argomento è vaaaaasto) mi accorgo che devo solo attenermi strettamente al tema che avevo scelto fin dall’inizio, e questo aiuta molto. Amanda sta invitando i suoi lettori a spedirle foto delle loro macchine fotografiche e di come espongono e raccolgono le loro foto, molto carino! Mav è tornata, il suo nuovo progetto si chiama The card society, andate a vederlo con i vostri occhi, bellissimo come sempre. E, già che ci siamo, Camilla sta raccontando i progressi di Morran nella convalescenza, io e la B siamo stati un po’ preoccupati e ci è tornato il sorriso :) e oggi ho un pranzo importantissssimo –  incrociate le dita per me!!!

A few things on the web that are worth considering: Stephanie tells about colour restrictions helping her sort out what to focus on in her projects, otherwise she gets stuck with too much choice - this rings a bell, as I have experimented also with the students of the New Academy of Fine Arts in Milan  limitations in creative efforts are good, everytime I spread myself all over the place in writing my book (the subject is vaaaast) I realize I only have to strictly stick with the theme I chose in the first place, and that helps a lot. Amanda is inviting her readers to send in pictures of their cameras and their photos displays, very cute! Mav is back, her new project is called The card society, go there yourselves, it’s as beautiful as ever. And, by the way, Camilla is tracking Morran’s recovery from surgery, myself and the B have been quite worried and now back to smile :)  and I have a veeeery important lunch today- cross your fingers for me, please!

Sono un rottame, ma è stata un gran bella festa :) Radio Popolare ha festeggiato i trent’anni di London Calling dei Clash con un grande concerto al Magnolia, che comprendeva uno dei gruppi che mi sono più cari, i Casino Royale, che hanno suonato per un locale talmente stracolmo che mi ci è voluta una certa fatica per arrivare ai piedi del palco. Ho dormito 4 ore e stamattina ho fatto una seduta di brainstorming con i miei studenti. Rientro alla radio in un’assurda calura, due ore in onda, di nuovo alla scrivania. In un libro che sto leggendo c’è questo tizio che segue un corso di fotografia, e gli fanno scalare una montagna per scattare una foto di un’aquila. Be’, immagino che ieri sera Ali sia stato la mia aquila.

Knackered, but it was a great party :) Radio Popolare celebrated 30 years of London Calling by The Clash with a great show at Magnolia’s in Milan, including one of the bands that are dearest to my heart, Casino Royale, playing for an incredibly packed venue where it took me some effort to get to the feet of the stage. Slept 4 hours and met my students for an intense brainstorming session in the morning. Back to radio station in unbelievable heatwave, on air for two hours, back to desk. In a book I’m reading there’s this guy who takes a photography course, and he has to climb a mountain to get a snap of an eagle.  Well, I guess last night Ali was my eagle.

Mentre Quentin Tarantino presenta il suo nuovo film al festival di Cannes, la Sposa si sposa sabato! Che è anche il mio compleanno…  Non so come fa ma sembra calmissima, forse è solo ko per i preparativi, d’altra parte lei e lo sposo hanno pensato a tutto, perfino a come tamponare la tristezza post-party! Sono sicura che sarà una giornata allegra e indimenticabile - ci siamo quasi!

While Quentin Tarantino presents his new film in Cannes, the Bride is getting married on Saturday! Which is also my birthday… I don’t know how she does it but she sounds very calm, maybe she’s just knocked out by preparations, not strange if you think that she and the groom have thought about everything, down to how to cushion the post-party melancholy! I’m sure it’s going to be a merry and unforgettable day – we’re almost there!

Mentre cercavamo, pulivamo e fotografavamo i cimeli della radio per la grande asta online, il nostro tecnico di bassa frequenza, E., ha trovato una cosa per me nei suoi cassetti polverosi, dove tiene viti di tutte le misure, fusibili e ogni genere di segreti: una cartuccia di pellicola Polaroid 600. So che dovrei essere soddisfatta della mia macchina digitale, ma la prospettiva di fare qualche scatto con la mia vecchia SX-70 mi ha reso felice come una bambina. Un raggio di luce in una giornata avvolta dalla tristezza. perché oggi mi manca tantissimo.

While collecting and dusting and photographing beautiful memorabilia for the  radio station’s great auction online, our low frequency technician, E., has found something for me in his dusty drawers, where he keeps screws of all sizes, fuses  and all kind of secrets: a cartridge of Polaroid 600 film. I know I should be content with my digital camera, but the prospect of taking a few pictures with my old SX-70 made me as happy as a baby. A ray of light in a day that has been enveloped in sadness, ’cause today I miss him so much.
